I just acquired a gently rolled 2011 Tacoma with the 2TR and the r155f 5-speed. My plan is to use a Trail Toys 3/4 link kit on it and some 05+ super duty axles and make it a streetable crawler. This brings me to my question. I want to run an Atlas behind the 2TR, but AA doesnt have an adapter to get anywhere close to making this work, so i think i came up with a decent solution after some research.

Will the following work:
2TR 2.7l with the R155f Bellhousing, clutch, TO bearing, etc
to a Heep AX15 5-speed trans from a Wrangler (or another vehicle if there is a better option available)
Directly to the Atlas without an adapter.

The last part is the beauty of this swap. No adapters needed. Just out of pocket to purchase a good AX15 and start swapping parts. I can recoup some money when i sell the r155f and the chain drive t-case.

Potential issues i see:
1. The input shaft will probably need to get changed out. Ive read that internally the AX15 is basically the same as any R-series toyota trans. So if i have to, ill find the input i need (hoping its as easy as using one from a R155f) and swap it in. Boom. Reuse the clutch, bearing, fork, etc, from the R155f and rock on.
2. Can i swap in a lower 4.3:1 first gear from a r151f to the AX15 assuming all of the parts interchange?
3. Does marlin have a short throw shifter or shifter bushings that will work with this AX15 just in case it needs some upgrades.

Anyone else see a problem with this plan?

Thanks
--Alex

This is the truck in question. I already replaced the front fenders, grille, lights, etc that were damaged in the roll. The flatbed is the next thing to go. Overall its a great start with only 126k miles on it. 4.88s, bald 35s, rear locked, etc. Just needs some love and some TLC. Goal is to make this one streetable.

After a little more research it looks like in order to run the 4.3:1 gears, i will need the corresponding counter shaft to get it work right. Can anyone confirm?

Found a new counter shaft

I was looking at this thread on Pirate for my info.

Anyone know if i can swap the tailhousing from an AX15 on to the r155? Maybe i can swap the AX15 output shaft at the same time?

Bueller? Bueller? I know someone knows or has tried what i am thinking. Searched but there are 10+ threads that start to discuss this but never got any reply.

Since the transmissions are very similar, id figure this idea would work.

I dont know much about the R155 and I have never tried a swap like this, however these are my opinions.  I would think an R150F would work best for what you are trying to do, and this is why.  Your 2TR bellhousing will go onto an R150F, and the center section of an R150F is the same as a Ax-15, so you could either convert the rear half of the trans to AX-15, or advanced adapters makes an adapter to go from R150F to Atlas.  We can get you everything you need as far as that is concerned (transmission, atlas, and adapter or Ax-15 tail housing) here at Marlin Crawler.  If you really want to run the turbo first gear, then you do have to get the correlating counter shaft.  Its basically a whole new gear set you would need instead of just first gear.
