My 4wd 80's van:

stock has 4hi only, with pushbutton 4wd, had to install 2 speed t-case and a shifter. The thing with cupholders is actually an icemaker/cooler

Aisin manual hubs from an 86 4runner:

You can go pretty much anywhere with this thing, and then camp in it.

Shaggin Waggin! My first memory of these vans was when I saw one liying on its side up by the the Russian River with an Asian dude standing next to it scratching his head. Its cool though, clean too. Most of the ones I see are pretty destroyed. I also like the old Tercel 4wd wagons and the Corolla AllTrac wagons too

Ha ha you folks are hilarious.  The hubs worked out great - thanks man.
As for straight axle, it's not really possible the way the differentials and transfer are lined up, unless you had it ALL custom built.  A friend of mine is doing just that to his - solid/IFS hybrid front he invented, 33" tires, 3rzfe (only engine that fits under the front seats with more HP)...he belongs on here more than me. I'd rather customize a 70's FJ40. For now I love my van the way it is, cost $750, 30mpg, goes anywhere I've wanted it to...and yes, constant   :ladys-man:   Something about the 80's transformer look that's popular right now?

Dude, put some 30x9.50 AT's on that unit, you may have to trim the fenders a little, make the roof removable, install a rollbar and run around with a bikini top in the summer. In the winter, just put the the hard top back on.  :ladys-man:

Yup, we had this guy come by and we talked about Crawlers for half an hour, and then we went out side to check out his "rig" and it was bone stock 4WD Van that he had just picked up. Apparently he has found out how to fit a W56 in there and he said he would be back after he swaped in a Toy 8" front axle. 8) He wants to get an Ultimate and wheel it!
