22r exhaust from header
« on: Sep 04, 2017, 01:24:56 PM »
I recently fired off my "old blue" 4 runner with only a header and the collector pipe that mates to it and need to install something for exhaust. I figured I'd probably just do a muffler and exit piping.
Any suggestions on what to build and what sounds good?
Thanks

Magnaflow is always the way to go.  Great sound, and great performance.

what header is that? it looks tight to the block
Measure the inside of the bottom of that header and use THAT size pipe.   Do NOT use that damn stock tubing.  at bare minimum use 2inch inside diameter or your header might as well be a stock exhaust.
I always use a muffler that is free flowing, if your friends pet snake cant go through that sucker in less than a mouses heart beat dont put it on your truck

you need to toss that little filter thing and put that black hose to that location and run a hose from where I made the yellow line to where that black hose is connected.

well for one the hose you have running to the air filter should have much more vacuum to work correctly it SHOULD be connected to that port that you are missing where i made the little yellow arrow.

I ran one of those small filters where you have yours for a few months and the entire engine bay was covered with an oily film, it was practically dripping from the bottom of the hood and just made a slimy mess  I finally got some 3/8 plastic pipe fittings and vent hose and tossed the little filter and ran it to the bottom of my air filter where yours is.  havent had to de-oil the underside of the hood since.

Right on. I have noticed the oily puffs from the filter. I was considering plumbing them both to an oil catch can to keep all that :pokinit: out of the intake system...

in a carb setup all that junk gets burned, not like the efi intake where it can slow down and settle in the intake

Glen is correct.  I am still running the stupid filter however because I have so much blow by right now that when I run the tube to the carb it will soak my filter up with oil and make just as much of a mess as the little filter.  If you get that much oil you need new rings though :).  I'll take care of that and then run the hose again.

is your PCV valve going to the port just inboard of the carb??

Put an oil catch can inline with the hose from the valve cover to the filter

On another note where do you find the motor likes to be timed at. I have a header, the weber setup, .030 over and a mild cam...
Just trying to get a starting point reference.

Yes it is.  And the PCV valve is good.  This started after a blown HG and has gotten gradually worse.  Compression test was way low, so I deduce excessive crank case pressure.

its been 3 years since my engine froze because I forgot to drain the water.  i had a blown hg but it was just going out the exhaust so when I needed it during the day i'd put water in it and do what I needed to do then drain the water.  that one night I forgot and the temps dropped fast.  it was around 20* when I remembered and poured boiling water over the radiator and got it drained out but the freeze plugs popped out of the block.
If I recall it did best around 12* but I would always adjust the distributor while working the throttle by hand and where ever it would take throttle without a burp then I would kill it and see if it would start easily and make micro adjustments til it started without issue.

very likely assuming all 4 cylinders were low
