Call this a land cruiser???
« on: May 20, 2017, 05:06:55 PM »
Hi all,

I just noticed the 2017 so-called Land Cruiser. It's a pretty sad replacement for the old FJ40.

Some of the specs that caught my eye:

Toyota's 2017 Land Cruiser
13MPG city, 18 HWY. Really??? My 1985 Hilux gets at least that good.
AWD, but with some 4WD-sounding name attached (and a LSD center diff)
Super-duper 8-speed automatic transmission. Bet ya need it without  that low-range transfer case...
Independent suspension front and rear.
Interior: Buncha computerized junk
Price: $84,775. Really.

Lewis's 1985 Hilux
Mileage unknown; probably similar city to the LC, better on the highway
Real, Honest-to-goodness 4WD. Ya know, the kind with a transfer case and low range.
Solid axles, front and rear.
Interior: Seats, heater, gauge cluster & steering wheel. That's all we needed back in '85...
Price: I've paid a little over $4000 and counting, including ALL repairs. Just think, one 2017 Land cruiser vs. 20 1985 Hiluxes.

I can tell all of yall right now that I prefer my Hilux! Can you put chains all around on the Land cruiser to dig through 12 inches of packed snow? Nope. Can you go over a bump that sticks up more than 8"? Nope. Does it require any intelligence to drive? Nope, again. Can you go to my machine shop and make some custom part to fix it with? Nope. These are all things I do on a regular basis.

Please, Toyota. Give us back the FJ40, not some Street Cruiser. Literally: take the FJ40 design, add the latest and greatest in strong, durable, Toyota drivetrains, and sell it.

2017 toyota pavement cruiser brah

300k's lil ol toyota

I put 7 gallons in it no matter what. I could have filled it last month, I could have filled it last week, for whatever reason it's always 7 gallons
4wd
solids front and rear
seats (sorta), heater controls (no heat though), cluster half works, steering wheel doesn't have working horn...that's like 50 percent less than what it had, but it still goes offroad so what ever
interior has a dashboard and that's about it. stripped out or go home
1,800 for truck + 2,000 ish in repairs and removing garbage parts from the truck

better parts : My steering is 100 percent connected to my wheels, my transmission shifter is 100 percent connected to my tranny (same for T case), my gas pedal has an actual connection to the carburetor (bonus points for having a carburetor and spelling carburetor correctly [stupid french root word]), I HAVE a clutch (ultra bonus points) and it's not some drive by wire garbage clutch

1984 toyota WINS, but I'm not saying I wouldn't own a 2017 LC if it was given to me :gap:

...steering wheel doesn't have a working horn

Well, mine didn't either until I fixed it (bonus points for machine shop work)

I do too. And there are still parts of the world where not knowing how to drive a clutch can be a serious handicap. I spent most of last summer as an intern in Panama -- I was one of 3 people on the team who could drive our lab truck. (And it was a really nice 2007-ish diesel Hilux. The rest of the crew sure was missing out...)

I might, too, but just think... With the purchase price, you could buy 20 middle '80s Hiluxes, and a few decades of Wyoming tax would buy 20 rear lockers. Then you could have 20 rock crawlers for the price of one asphalt crawler. Who could turn down a deal like that?

Just so you know. The rear axle is not independent, and there is a low range.+

Hmmm. They didn't make that clear. -- how did you find this out? Does Toyota have a secret website that I don't know about?

They list a 4 link solid axle...it's still not gonna offroad that well

Rear suspension:
Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS)
4-link rear suspension with coil springs, stabilizer bar and semi-floating axle

Toyota's 2017 Land Cruiser
13MPG city

That is appalling. My carbie V8 Hilux does close enough to that!

Yes, but also consider 5800 pounds and 381 horse. Wish they would build a similar diesel option.

Using a converter I have worked out that my dual cab Hilux weighs around 4500lbs. I think with all of this technology they should be able to do a bit better given that I am running a mid-70s 350. Surely a later injected 350 would do much better.

In saying that, the Land Cruiser does probably make quite a bit more power. I'll know once my engine is back together. But by Australian standards at least that is a thirsty car!

The fj80 weighs almost 5k and has less power and gets the same gas mileage.

I've always said this, but Toyota are a bunch of bastids not giving us the good trucks. they could adapt their design to work with the EPA, and they'd sell like hot cakes. I don't NEED the diesel, but I sure want the quad cab hilux :( . Meanwhile, everyone is driving twin turbo diesel V8 LC's kicking out 479 ft-lbs of torque.

It seems like it normally wouldn't be an issue, there must be hidden politics in the background as usual.

The American automobile market if full of sissies with lots of available credit, soft hands and fat butts.  Until that changes they have no monetary reason to market the awesomeness over here.

There are sissies, soft hands, and fat butts everywhere.

It's simply supply and demand.  It's all about profit!!

The Japanese are one of the most savvy market researchers on the planet.

If I could go to my local Toyota dealer and see a brand new 1985, 22R, standard cab, SR5, 5-speed, for the same prices as it was in 1985, I'd buy two.

And there would be a small number of people racing to buy them... but compared the millions who want the new technology advancements, and all the techno-bling, the few thousands that would buy that 1985 Toy truck would be happier than a pig in hot poop.... but for the bean counters at Toyota it would most likely be a nightmare loss of profit to Toyota.

You guys don't see any market for small diesels here? I do. they'd make good ranch and fleet vehicles. buy like 25 of them in base trim, BAM. last 300,000 miles and get good economy.

If the domestics start putting out more small diesel options I'm sure Toyota would jump in.

What's sad is a Tacoma would probably get a diesel before Land Cruiser's and Tundras in the us. Only sad cause I need a full sized truck.
