W56-C removal question
« on: Apr 01, 2017, 09:31:00 AM »
1989 Regular cab pickup 4x4 22re w56-c trans as far as I know. Doing the prep work to replace my clutch this coming weekend and I'm removing as much as possible before my transmission jack shows up on Tuesday (hopefully). Of course I've run into the obligatory rusted or rounded bolt ( nothing a drill bit and a tap couldn't fix)but all in all it's going pretty well. I'm using the Haynes manual, The FSM for a 93 that someone kindly posted a download link to, and some pretty descriptive videos on YouTube. Removing a transmission and replacing the clutch is by far the biggest mechanical job I've undertaken, but so far it feels pretty straightforward ( I'm sure that can change quick). The only question that came up during my prep work is this; do I have to remove the starter to remove the transmission? It sure looks like it's bolted in front of where I'll be disconnecting the bellhousing. There's even a small dome in the lip of the bellhousing whose only purpose seems to be to accommodate the starter being forward of the bellhousing. Any experience with this would be greatly appreciated.
Also, just to fish around a little more, I got the parts to do the clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing and rear main seal. I also got some shifter seats and socket from MC and a new clutch fork boot because mine is all droopy and swollen. Anything else I should do while I'm in there?

I believe you will need to remove the starter.  It bolts into the bell housing if I remember correctly.

I would get all new parts that might be old and questionable.  Like a new slave cylinder, rubber boots, and Marlins steel braided line for the clutch.

dont know if you still need they help but yet the starter comes out it will be a nut and a bolt, or it should be.
its a very straight forward removal tho,
removed shifters from in the cab
remove drive shafts
remove eletrical connectors for indicator lights
removed slave cylinder off of bell housing
remove cross member
remove bell housing bolts
remove trans
remove pressure plate clutch and flywheel

With the starter out and tranny removed, now is a good time to change the fuel filter............
