CBI diy first gen plate bumper
« on: Jan 08, 2017, 09:04:35 AM »
So I picked up a CBI diy plate bumper for my 4runner. Comes with no instructions and i couldn't find a detailed thread on one. Its not to hard to figure the puzzle out, but I figured I would do one for everyone to reference from so the build will go a little faster.

Parts laid out.

Frame brace burned in. Winch plate bolted on to start building off of.

Front face of the bumper and second mounting points tacked on.

They sent you a diy bumper with no instructions?  Very odd way of doing business

I'm sure they sent the instructions either through email or other service. We always email instructions to anyone who buys a bumper from us (NWTI) so check your spam folders..

No e-mail that I could find. It was probably in the box but UPS didn't really handle with care. Got home to find it on the porch with a huge hole in the side of the box. :shake:

Its almost all tacked up. Will finish the last pieces tomorrow and start welding it up.

It tucks the winch in tights. Even more than the old front range bumper.

Nice looking bumper.  Have any pictures or specs of the dented up Toyota, looks pretty cool from what I can see.

Looks Great!

Suggestion: Weld in some gussets withing the wings before welding them up, that will help reduce any warping.

Thanks. No good pics of the old wet dog, will try to snap one after work. Its a 84 flat bed locked front and rear with a 80 series front and a 96 rear. Duals with 4.7, full hydro to turn the 40's.

Ya, was kind of worried about it doing that with it not being boxed in. Will have to do that.

I got the last pieces in and welded it out. I didnt like how low it is off the grill so drilled out new mounting holes. Looks a lot better.

I have the cbi kit bumper I welded up for my 95 second gen 4Runner. It did not come with any instructions and there aren't any on their website. It's still a great bumper for the price but if you aren't from a real fab background it might be tough to figure out

Got it painted and mounted. Found that the top plate was interfering with the winch. So I had to trim to fit.

Its been in the 20's here the last couple days. Not to bad but a pain to get the paint to dry any time fast. So I ended up having to get a little creative to make it go a little faster.

Yes a 87 sr5  power everything. It sounds cool but parts are getting harder to find. So it's more of a pain.

4xsports is right. I am running 80s series axles. I am only running the one slee arm because it's not a wheeler, it's the family camping/overland rig. Doesn't see hard enough trails to need the tie rod up hi. Also it was cheeper to just buy the one arm. :gap:

the bumper looks great!! it motivated me to just order one for myself! Where did you get the blinker lights? they look like they belong. Also, did the bumper come with any frame support?  .... like this: http://www.4xinnovations.com/84-95-Front-Bumper-Frame-Support_p_50.html

thanks

The blinkers came with, but I have seen them a napa. It comes with a frame support, a bent plate the wraps on top of the frame.

I remember when I first started wheeling. I didn't do that and it only took one or two pulls to find out why you need to.

Can you post pictures of the mounting points to the frame? Specifically The L shaped bracket with the three bolt holes... im in the process of putting mine together and have a feeling they accidentally drilled them one hole length off. the closest i can get after trying every configuration i can think of places the winch plate about 1/2" above the hole for the fairlead...

thanks.
