Starting a new crawler project. 88 PU V6. Its got the V6 trans in it. So I have a turbo 4 cylinder sitting in the garage. Which one is the better of the two. I know the turbo has a lower first gear but thats about as much as I know. Which one should should I go with?  :dunno:

The only advantage to the turbo is that you don't need an adapted to bolt the gear driven transfer case to it. The V6 is a chain driven transfer case that if you want duals or 4.7's you'll need to buy an adapter so you can bolt a gear driven case to it.

OTO Phil

It's also stronger, and the more desirable unit

More desired because of the 23 spline. Which the V6 also has. It's only more desired for 22re's because the V6 won't bolt up to a 22re.

Yeah that's true. Plus the lower first gear is better for future low range crawling [emoji106]

Dingman.

Ive heard people say they didnt like the lower first gear for daily driving.  :dunno:
As far as strength, isnt the r150/r151 pretty much the same?  I never had an issue with my r150 behind my 3.4 swap, and i drove it pretty hard.

Yes, they pretty much are the same.

Turbo 4runners all had an auto trans.   Never seen or head them coming with a manual trans.   Only the turbo trucks,  had the r151.
And,  if you find a turbo trans bellhousing,   you CAN run the r150 v6 5speed trans behind the 20r/22r/22re.  If bolts right to the 22re and to the r159,  I KNOW  for sure,  as that's what I have been running for 4 years.    22re v6 trans,  Marlin adapter to 23 spline tcases.    BTW,  I have 2 turbo bellhousings sitting in my living room,  for my next projects.   But for 400 plus shipping,  I would sell ONE.
95 4 runner. 4 cyl dual ultimate w. R150.  V6 rear w spool.  New Chevy springs on 12" extended frame.      Front.  SAS w chromoly shafts.  And spartan    In frazier park ca 93225

How much stronger? I am looking at upgrading to an R-series, ideally I would like an R151 from a 22RT-E, however they are quite rare and expensive in Australia. R150 and R151 with the chain driven transfer case are both readily available, however the only difference between them I am able to find is the first gear ratio.

The r151f in the u.s. found in the turbo trucks are gear driven t cases as well. 23 spline input on t case .From the sound of it, there more common there, then here

Just edited my post - all of the R150s and most R151s have chain driven transfers. My mistake  :hammer:

All r151f in the United states came as rf1a gear driven cases. Atleast all that I have seen. Maybe big mike can clear that up.

I had a feeling that was the case. Over here, the R151F was available with the RF1A transfer case but only when behind the 22RTE. Which is not an especially common car, same with you guys I'm assuming? R150F was only offered with the VF1A transfer case, but there are a lot of late 90s and early 2000s Hiluxs fitted with R151F gearboxes and VF1A transfer cases.
