tachometer and shift levers
« on: Apr 03, 2005, 03:08:34 PM »
2 questions here.

I broke the needle pin on my SR5 tachometer.  Do I need the tach guts from my specific model toyota, or would one from the same-ish year toyota xxxxx work?  i.e. if the tach reads the same RPM would it work in my 4runner?

2nd - does marlin make a shift lever that is TALLER than stock? I see a one with a shorter throw, but is that one talller than o.e. one?

becuase I like having the shift lever closer to the stearing wheel.  less movement between hand from stearing wheel to shift lever.  not a big deal in the truck, but once you drive a race car with a tall shift lever, you'll want one in every vehicle.

so your saying a tach form a 90 camry with the same redline will work?  I just need the guts of it since I broke the metal pin inside the coil

might try using a shifter from an L45, L50 or L52 tranny, they're tall and have 2 bends in them towards the driver, sort of like an older fullsize truck or a hot rod shifter

don't know enough about toyota's to know what trucks those came out off, can you give me year and models for each tranny?  also it's going in a 3.0L 1990 4runner

I want to say that you need to find another truck tachometer.  If I remember correctly the size of the pin varies and the diameter of the needle hub varies between truck clusters.  Also, if you just want the guts you have to find ones that match the bolt patter into the cluster shell as well

On your shifter, not knowing how tall your looking for, have ya tried your local truck parts shop?  We have a parts house that stocks things for semi trucks, and they have gear shift knobs that extend about four to five inches taller. In our store they're right beside the naked chrome lady mud flaps!!  They are usually a retro looking thing.  Clear or colored plastic with glitter in them!!  Just think handlebar streamers!?!?  They just thread on, might have to get a thread adapter.  My uncle had one with a 45 degree bend and was about 8 inches tall in his 85 GMC 1 ton, which put it right beside the steering wheel?  Or just do a lower rider trick, take yours out and go to a welding shop and have it cut and weld some bar stock with the bends & height you need!  I have a old glass doorknob on my gear shift, in order to do that I had my gearshift cut and rethreaded!  Looks SWEET!!
Miss ya Dean (4THEWKN) & Kyle (KYOTA)!!
