1979 Gauge Cluster in an 1985?
« on: Jul 18, 2016, 07:48:30 PM »
Hello Fellow Off Road friends, Today I made a wonderful discovery at a junk yard here in Utah.
While at the Local Pick-n-Pull I found a 1979 Toyota Pickup 2WD, I have never seen one of these in a Junk Yard, Let alone anything with a 20R in it! It was mostly torn apart, the 20R was a factory dual chain setup... Coolio!

Anyways, I was looking for some cool things I could get off it for Cheap and I took the gauge cluster, I always loved these clusters in the way that they are designed, the colors just look nice.

I was thinking... How hard would it be to get it working on my 1985 Toyota Pickup 4x4? It is a Non EFI Truck.
The electrical is my least concern, as I can get some diagrams and what not, and just splice and Solder it in.
What about the speedo cable? Is the mechanical speedo cable the same on all these early trucks in the sense of how they
mount up to the gauges?
I know it won't have the 4WD indicator light, I don't care for that.
Mounting won't be a huge problem either, I am fairly craft and will break out some zip ties.

Or, if you are interested in buying it the cluster let me know.

Thanks! Happy wheelin'

Cable will connect no problem. The dimensions of the cluster aren't quite the same as a 2nd gen. You'll have to figure out how you'll get it to look correct in there. Also it probably does have the location for a 4wd indicator just not bulb in it. I would go back and get the plugs for the back of it and then just re pin your stuff into it.

Thanks, I got everything to work but the tach, I think I have some wires wired up differently, I got the plugs from the junk yard that go into the back of it, just waiting on a wiring diagram from another member.
It doesn't fit 100%, But it looks cool :)

This is the page I am looking for, it doesn't need to be scanned, just a picture of the connector round plugs and what they go to is good.
I would've used that one, but it is to low quality that I can't read it.
