Since the last week of June I've been working hard on something I've never done before. Went wheeling only once.. Have completely neglected my Tacoma.. Had wind taken outta my sails finishing up a particularly challenging project... It's been an incredible ride for sure.

An all-new, industry-first future awaits... #RCLT

My guess

I'm surprised its easier to CNC and fabricate that versus having a beefier casting made? I would also say a solid cast unit would be stronger.
If you see it, its for sale.

He didn't say spindle lift he said a plate knuckle. I seriously don't see where a portal box could be in that shadow.

Maybe if he didn't  put that stupid white spot right in the way we'd know!

Goooooood morning Crawler Land!

Couple quick updates:

1) In analyzing the current state of my Tacoma, I'm estimating it to be 70% completed of my overall vision for this truck. Because my time for the Taco has been greatly limited since last summer, it definitely has been stuck a rut for a bit but it's about to start heating up with things I've been working diligently on for quite some time. This spring will bring really nice updates to this thread :yesnod: and this off-season should be the last of major upgrades so I can finally begin to enjoy wheeling this truck without constantly being mentally bombarded with things to improve.

2) We posted a new video to YT that I wanted to share here of a customer (Teddy ) driving the Tacoma with no throttle up "The Wall" of the Poughkeepsie Gulch trail in Colorado at near street tire pressure. Enjoy!

have you had any issues with the factory t-case?

I know you stated that if there were more substantial issues with the actuator that marlin would introduce a fix.

just looking for a status on this

So far so good! It shifts in and out of both Low Range and 4WD without any trouble. Toyota's release notes for the then-new 3rd gen included improvements to the t/case shifting performance, however looking through the detailed transfer case notes I cannot find anything different (perhaps it was a programming/electronic improvement). So maybe Toyota did improve upon the electronic shifting of the chain drive t/case.... ....and/or also please understand that I care about this truck and therefore do NOT drive it in the mud or sand. I expect the shifting performance of the factory t/case to last for many, many years to come.

While I'm here, I might as well post another YT video :gap:

Three weeks ago I did begin typing up some replies to get this thread back on track but have been too busy to resume with it at the moment. I did look back and discover that the last actual update posted of the truck's build progress was April 29 of last year :o So, I've got a year's worth to get updated, but, however, I'm not too far behind currently as last summer & fall I was out wheeling (nothing major new to the truck) and also from last summer through late winter I was designing and developing RCLT and had zero time for the truck.

Current schedule has been pushed back a bit due to things outside my control, and now the next big news for the Tacoma should ideally be posted prior to May 13 so we'll see how much I can get updated by then

Until then, here is what I posted to FB yesterday :eyebrow: (might need to be logged into FB to view the image)

Awesome build, Mike! Really cool to see Marlin Crawler Taco Box developed in a 3rd Gen!

Question - I realize the TacoBox works in an automatic, but has anyone actually done it? Installed a Marlin Crawler Taco Box in a 3rd Gen automatic Tacoma?

I realize Crawl Control works with the OEM t-case in 4 low, and the Taco Box in 1.0:1. But does the Crawl Control gimmick work with the Taco Box and OEM t-case engaged in low-low?

We will be working with a few local 3rd gen automatic owners possibly later this fall with a few related projects. We have a few 3rd gen manuals installed, however, we've had to put manual installs on hold for a while. If I may, I'd like to comment more on this another time, thanks!

Back from the dead, it's this thread!!

What's up guys and gals?!!

My last actual update was April 29 of last year. Brief overview is that once the wheel'n season got underway I didn't have time to work on the truck. Then, during my normal winter season I spent the better part of 6 months designing and producing our first 4WD Independent Front Suspension system which set any work to my truck back until March of this year. Since March I've been on a non-stop cram of all my lost winter months and have gotten a LOT done. Due to the extremely short off-season, I have missed a few events and will be ready for my first of 2019 in 8 days from now so I have to get this thread back on track stat!

I'm gonna move fast and gloss over info; If you're curious about specifics post up and I'll provide more details later! 行きましょう!!LET'S GO!!

April 30, 2018: Driver rear Brake Repair

I've seen other 3rd gen owners complaining about the rear drum brakes locking up and this happened to me twice during the 2017 wheeling season. The first time was in July 2017 during FJ Summit after having set the e-brake at the very top of Imogene Pass and then resuming down the other side. It was very cold and sort of wet and the rear brakes would not unlock. I rocked the truck forward and rearward a few times with the clutch and then after a loud KA-POW they free'd up and everything seemed fine. Then again during MCR16 on the Rubicon in Sept 2017 while entering RTF property I set the e-brake so I could jump out to unlock the gate and when I resumed driving I noticed straight away that the driver rear tire was not rolling. I got to mad that I just put it in Double Low Range and idled forward until it went KA-POW and the brakes free'd up and never gave me any trouble the rest of the weekend.

The rear brakes and parking brake was all 100% stock at that time and brakes were adjusted properly. Fast-forward to late April 2018 and I finally was ready to see what was going on before taking off for the Texas Jamboree. Here is what I found out:

One of the two pivot rivets had come loose so I just welded em to the backing plate. Done.

Man I dislike rear drum brakes. Pile of crap. Gonna have to do something about this.
