New Section?

I'd like to see a section for winches... maybe some reviews/experiences with them? Maybe subdivided into categories of brand, then subjects of models?

Tech Section > Winches > Warn > 8274 etc...

Just curious because even with my great search I made, it's hard to find winch threads where I'll find an interactive audience with personal experience...

Unless I should just post it with my build section... Or is there already a winch section and I missed it?

What are you wanting to know about an 8274? Google should answeroat questions but if you have a particular I may be able to help a little.

I'd like to hear about using my 8274 with a single red top battery and stock 22re alternator or if that's even possible. I'm getting ready to setup dual batteries, but even then I'm not sure if this stock alternator is up to the task.. And mounting it on a 3rd gen pickup, what height from the frame rail cross member did they mount it? What worked/didn't. Also looking for anyone with experience relocating the controller box-i want to move mine into the motor bay, with integrated switches into my switch panel.. What switches work? What the type of switches are called, I.E. momentary double pole single throw or single pole double throw? Or just a single throw single pole momentary switch with a couple relays..

The search I linked above has been really helpful as far as finding general information about my winch, and I've seen some people's builds, but I thought it would be neat to have a section just for winches... After all the sections there are, it seems to be one of the missing sections...

In my opinion it would all be relative to your definition of "use" the winch. Is this an object you'll be using on a daily basis on the trail or just a nice back up plan for when the poop hits fan? I personally have ran an 8274 on 1 single battery with a stock gm alternator on my 88 suburban thst we used for a recovery vehicle. Alt output may have been 80-100 amp max. Yes you could certainly tell that it put some draw on the system when you had a single line pull with a good heavy load on the end of it. Did it work? Ofcourse it did. Was it the most optimal set up? Absolutely not if it were on 2 good batteries such as a nice deep cycle for the winch with a diode separating it from the cranking battery it would have been much better. In your situation i believe you will be just fine with 2 red tops and the stock 22re alt. Of you notice the winch is drawing too much let it rest for a few seconds and then hit it again.

I'm running a stock 3rz alt with a single red top in my dd with a 9000lb hobo freight special and it works great. I love the 8274 for it's speed and power just too darn bulky for my application.

Will relocating the control box would be of much use, it doesn't appear it would make fitment any easier.

Write up on dash mount winch control.

A recovery section may be better than a dedicated winch forum, likely not enough traffic for winches alone to warrant its own section.

While relocating the solenoids onto my inner fender well won't make fitment any easier, it will allow me to clean up a bit off the front, and put it in a vented, flood "proof" container... the vents would go out the bottom of the box, and wrap around it kind of the same way you would run a fuel line from a fuel cell to prevent spillage in a roll-over... This would hopefully prevent water from entering, while sill allowing the container to "breath"

As far as the recovery section, I agree... then you could cover stuff like the land anchor and stuff...

I've seen a couple of those links, except for the stu-offroad... good write-ups, but I'm also interested in knowing more about how the winch will draw on the alternator with a dual battery setup... specifically, will it kill my alternator haha...

The quickest way to kill an alternator is using it to constantly charge a depleted battery, with the stock alt not being designed to do anything more than run the oem equipment, heavy use of the winch on the trail will greatly reduce your alt's life expectancy.  If you are expecting to use the winch as your go to recovery tool, you should consider running a higher rated alt., it will also be useful if you plan to have a readywelder for trail use.

If you use a couple of snatch blocks, you can reduce the amp draw for any given weight in half, the draw should be closer to the 24vlt specs below.
