I am new to the forum and have owned Toyota's for years. Our first was purchased by my dad in 87 22R 4x4 base model. I recently purchased a 85 SR5 Xtra cab with a 22RE. I am in the process of getting several minor fixes taken care of. I just ordered the Marlin short shifter and am looking forward to getting it installed. I have been lurking on the site for a while and found some very informative info on here. Anyway just wanted to drop in and say Hello.

Hello, it's me again. I have been working on my 1985, SR5, 4x4 with the 22RE daily trying to get it where it will be reliable enough to not break down all the time. I recently replaced the plug wires, air filter, added a HO alternator from LCE and wiring, LCE Header, Free Flow Cat, Exhaust, BFG KO2 AT, LED interior lamps, Vac lines, new radiator hoses, and belts.

When I first got the truck it would idle around 1500 RPM all the time. Now I have it running at around 1000rpm but it still seems high. The Idle adjustment screw is as tight as I can get it (new O ring as well). I can pres the petal lightly and it will stick at 1200rpm until I give the gas petal a tap. I also cleaned the front side of the TPS and its clean but have not taken the whole thing off. Would you guys replace the TPS? I looked at 4Crawlers test and set up procedures but that seems like too much trouble and I don't have the equipment to do all of that. Would you just replace the TPS and see how that works? I am at a loss but it runs like a sewing machine (no Misses or backfires) other than the high idle. Sorry for the long post but I thought it may help rule out some of the things I recently upgraded.

Thanks guys I am truly enjoying this forum.

Even if you bought a new tps, you would still have to adjust, I would spend the time and learn how to adjust the tps, make sure you follow the steps :twocents:

High idle could be the AUX air valve isn't working correctly

are you someone didn't adjust the actual linkage for more power?

I remember doing that back in the day.... basically, adjusting play out of the cable

I agree with Toe, if your throttle cable isn't too tight then the probable culprit is the Aux. air valve, per the FSM (Factory Service Manual). Adjust or replace as required, your hoses are probably crispy down there, too. :welcome:

Thanks Guys! I will try the TPS test and adjustment first. There is a good bit of slack in the throttle cable. I can turn it the linkage at least 1/4" or more before the engine revs.

Thanks again!

Got my new Marlin Short Shifter installed today and so far it works like a champ! Now on to the TPS testing and adjustment...
