Okay, after putting these 36 IROK's on, I decided that I really should "Tune" my 22RE so its running at its peak perfomance. These tires really suck the HP out of the engine but their totally worth it. Just got done driving about 50 miles of road with 12"-24" of crapping ice snow at 3 1/2 psi with no problems!

So how do you "properly" tune a rebuild and modified 22RE? And in what order?

Heres the specs of my engine:
85 22RE rebuild about 8000 miles ago
All rebuild part where bought from Engnbldr.com
X-Large 5" K&N Cone Filter #RU-2800
3" diameter intake tube
94 Throttle Body and Upper Intake Plenum Conversion
Plenum, EFI Runners, Intake & Exhaust Ports ported and polished
DOA C270 EFI Cam
LC Adjustable Timing Gear
Head Rebuilt with OEM Valves
Cylinders bored 0.020 over
2 1/4" Doug Thorley Tri-Y header
2 1/4" exhaust for header back
No Cat and EGR

Oh, and before anyone asks, engine swap (for more cylinders) is out of the question right now.

I'm also not really looking for how to "pep" it up with mods...I've been there - done that. Its pretty much pointless for me to put any more money into it since its still only going to have 4 cylinders...... Right now I'm more concerned about power and effienency of the motor driving to the trails, because once I'm on the trails I have lots-o-gears to deal with the rest of it. (dual case with 4.7's)

I'm just more curious as to the right way to tune it everything.... so it can work at peak performance and get the most beifit from the mods.

What I'm thinking its something like this:

Clean air filter.
Set spark plug gap to ??? (I'm using NGK's)
Degree cam again and set it to ????
Reset valve lash to ???
Set AFM bypass screw to stock number ???
Do I tweak AFM teeth ???
Set Idle (TB bypass screw) to OEM
Set dash pot to OEM
Set ignition timing to ???

Is that the right order? Did I miss something? What numbers should I use? How do I now its tuned to its peak performance? Or is there a specialist/expert on the 22R/RE motors in the Pacific Northwest that I could take it to or talk to????

This is the type of info that I think I need........

So do you really need a tune up or are you just rubbing it in that you have all that nice stuff on your engine?  Just kidding...
Big Mike posted a sweet thread about getting more power from a 22re that tells a lot of really good tips. I can't imagine that the lash and the timing and the air filter would need looking at after only eight thousand miles, but it can't hurt. Look around this board for that thread and it will tell you everything and more! Good luck, I can search for it if you can't find it, but it shouldn't be more than 3 or 4 pages back since this board doesn't get too much action.

No, I'm not rubbing it in by any means..... I know there has to be others out there with basically the same type of setup.

As for a "Tune-up", thats really no big deal. The engine runs okay now. I just want to maximize the performance of the engine with these mods. Someone out there must of had the same thoughts when they get to this level of engine mods.... sure there is a few other things that can been done to the engine before adding more crap like a turbo or a supercharger, but for me thats not feasible. If I had that type of money to put into it I would just do a twin turbo supra swap and then deal with the carnage.

is this the post your thinking of ???

That still doesn't refer directly to tuning, just basic mods....

you should advance your cam timing a couple degrees,  then call LCengineering for the lowdown on adjusting the  Mass air sensor, if i remember right moving the little gear hicky clockwise makes it run leaner :smack:counterclockwise, richer

what is the lift  on that doa cam??  11mm  should be a good place to start,  thats like .435 -.440 :driving:

LC also has a 4mm oversize throttlebody

I'm with Glen, advancing the cam will give more bottom end. with the over sized TB it will hurt bottom end so that may help with low end. mine is carbed so any thing i can add is all just basic eng, knowage. not personal exp.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

Isn't that the wrong way - Don't I want more top end so I can drive down the freeway?????

Also I'm not planning on spending any more money on silly products. I really don't see how a oversized TB would help considering I still have stock valves. I just don't see the cost worth the extra HP.....

WHITE_TRASH

It all depends how you drive.  as to what you do to the cam timing.  I used to have a 81 4x4 datsun that had the cam retarded a tooth.  to make it run I had to advance the timing 24 degrees.  It had NO bottom end but it would wind over 5 grand EASY.  It was fun to be almost stuck in the mud and hammer it to 7G's  sounded insane.
the throttle body is more of a gimmick really then an actual performance enhancer.  you hit it right on the head saying you dont need it with stock valves.  I would leave it as the last mod if I did it at all.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

oops, thought you said you HAVE an over sized TB. if not I would not do it eather! FYI  advance cam for low end, retard for top end. chose is yours, just giving info!

Well what kind of muffler are you running?  You might get a little more bottom end if you have a little more back pressure since your running 2 1/4 all the way out the back.  And if you haven't adjusted your rocker arms since the rebuild That wouldn't be a bad idea.

I don't know what kind of access you have, but at my JC a good way to tell how well an engine was running was to hook it up to a smog sniffer and it can tell you what needs to be tuned and so forth-I don't go there anymore, but I can't imagine that a local JC wouldn't allow you to give it a shot. I know it's unlikely, but hey, I bet I'm the first person to suggest it....
