Transmission needed
« on: Aug 01, 2013, 04:52:18 PM »
hi guys. I am looking for a transmission for a my 4runner. 22re 5speed. Right now I have a w56 and I know that is suppose to be a heavier trans than a g54 but I found a g54 with transfer case in a wrecked truck close by with 101,000 miles on it. What will I be giving up going to a g54 vs holding out and try to locate a w56. This is just a daily driver / hunting truck. So it would only be seeing occasional offroading. Thanks for the advise!

w56 is just alittle beefier but the g54 will work just fine for you! how much they want for that g54?

Not sure if it is a good deal or not but the guy said $300 for trans and case. It is already out of truck.

I have never shipped anything like that that far. Bet it would be kind of high.

OK guys here is what I have found. The best I can tell from the pics he sent is that it is a g54. The story is it was in a 87 pickup with 101,000 miles. the motor went out and this guy bought it as a parts truck. The condition of the trans is unknown. It has the transfer case still bolted together. He says he just wants to make room in his garage and will take 200 for it. I have to drive a hour and a half to get it. Would you guys gamble on it? My truck is still drivable just most times I have to skip 3rd I cant even hold it in. When it wants to pop out you cant reasonably hold it in. I changed fluid hoping to by a little time so I don't mind waiting but if that was a good deal I was going to go ahead and scoop it up. Also is the gear ratio any different. Will I notice any difference in fuel mileage or power? I will probably only be running 31 or 32 by 10.50 or 11.50s.

The gear ratios are going to be the same. It'll work in your truck but I believe the shifters will not be correct with your interior.

Thanks! Anyone ever made that swap? If so, how much trimming if any will I have to do to the floorpan? Can I still use the piece that connects to the console with the boots made into it? sorry I don't know exactly what that piece is called. Or will you be able to see the metal and edge of carpet. If so it sounds as if it might look a little tacky. If I can cover things up with that piece I might go with it. I don't mind trimming the floorpan a bit. but I rather wait out for a w56 then to have it all tacky looking. Even though it is just a hunting truck I still have to look at it, if yall know what I mean.

Goldrush, I tried to get you the pics of my shifter seat but it said file was to large and I don't no how to resize it. I do have the pics though if you are still interested just cant figure out how to resize so I can post them.

Ok guys, I have just about decided to go pickup that g54 this weekend. Will I need to swap any sensors or wiring or anything from the w56 to the g54. I really wanted to wait for a w56 but it is starting to jump out of 1st now so I don't know how much longer it will last. Can I use the shifter from my w56 or will I still be able to use the shifter boot that connects to the console with the g54. Just trying to end up with the cleanest look I can for the interior.

Ok, I have a new question for you guys. I found a w56 but the guy has seperated the trans and transfer case. Is there anything special I need to bolt them back together or is it as simple as just bolting them back together? What seals would I need to replace while they are apart. I was planning on the engine rear main seal but what about the trans and sense they are separate the transfer case?

It would be good to change the output seal of the transmission while your in there and just use silicone or gasket to glue the t-case to the transmission.

OK thanks, going to get the w56 this weekend unless the guy sells it. If so I will probably just get the g54 that is still available. I have looked high and low around here and nobody has a w56.

how bout the t case? are there any seals that need to be changed there like for the input shaft of output shaft? Sorry if that isn't the exact terms! I think I remember replacing some seals on a chevy transfer case once when I had one out.

I've been away for a couple weeks but been busy. I found a trans and been busy getting it in and then we went on vacation so things are getting back to normal now. Just to update yall I got the trans in and so far so good. Still keeping my fingers crossed, but all seems well. I think everyone for their advise it has been very helpful!
