I think the 3rd gens is where they stopped with the fully boxed frames. I have a 97 Tacoma with the open c. The boxing stops at the front hanger for the rear springs . I have a rear shackle hanger that is a lil tweeked and its causing my truck to lean on that side and causing my new Alcan springs to flex unevenly. I plan on some plating and new hangers. Anything pre-95 would be good, but am not totally sure on that. Definitely avoid the Tacoma frames  :twocents:

The Tacoma was when Toyota stopped the fully boxed frame with their trucks.

All pre-Tacoma 2wd and 4wd trucks have fully boxed frames, and with 1st and 2nd gen Runners using the same frame as the trucks, all of them should be boxed as well, I know I haven't seen one that wasn't.

Yes they do. The frame will ripple and/or crack right above the rear wheel in some cases. There is alot of info out there on the Taco frames and the issues they had with being weak and rusting like heck. Taco frames suck.

IMO that is not that much boxing. I would also but some bracing inside the "C's" before I welded the plates on.

If you think that is a lot of plateing, I would wonder what you would say about boxing an old Ford or Chevy frame from the 30's to hold a SBC!!!!!!

The plates are meant for the extra cabs which I think had the most problems. The open C has bracing in it but it is not enough imo. Those plates finish the boxing where Toyota left off.

Still the same open c frame in the rear. Pre 95 frames sound like the best option for you.
