3RZ swap
« on: May 10, 2013, 09:09:49 AM »
Does Marlin Crawler do engine swaps? If not, does anyone know of shops that do in Northern California? Specifically Toyota swaps. Thanks

you should do it yourself..... swapping an engine will be quite expensive trying to get a shop to do it

I don't have the time or fab skills to pull it off on my own. I'm just trying to see what something like this would cost. My 22RE is getting tired and I rather have something more modern with more power.

I had them do the wiring aspect of the swap. Top notch work. They do tons of engine swaps of all different makes. Also they are located in Oakland,ca.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm looking for a shop in California just because they may be more familiar with the smog laws here.

Yikes. You are looking at some major $$$ to do a smog legal swap here in Cali if you aren't doing it yourself. Enough that you'd come out ahead by just selling your truck and buying a Tacoma or something with more power!
Engine - $1k+
Tranny - ???
Wiring - lots o labor
Exhaust - Custom = $$$
Labor - $100/hr?? This is where they come out ahead and you lose!

A shop charged me $400 to replace an alternator (before I know how to wrench) and after that...I bought a set $250 set of quality tools and a haynes manual and got to learning how to do it myself. Best decision ever and a worthy investment that you'll have for the rest of your life

Not to mention, it gets a bunch plusher with a newer vehicle as well.

This is one of those things that if I doubted my own skills to pull off such a job (which I most certainly do), I'd want to be absolutely certain that the the shop doing it could make it work like factory.  I am not interested in dumping thousands and thousands into a truck that gains gremlins and loses reliability.  Have the pioneers, particularly on this board made a ton easier?  Yes!  But still there is massive range of work quality out there, which would give me pause.
