Why oh why would you "want" to build a 21ru???

What was it in?  Is it a car motor?  Was it imported to the U.S.?

they never put an R engine in the corolla, unfortunately.

the 21R-U is a japanese smogger engine.  they didn't use the 20R or 22R since they're both over 2.0l, which would mean every vehicle produced for sale there with those engines would've been taxed big time.  so they developed the 21RU, which is like a baby brother to those engines.  it's essentially a 20R with a tiny bore, same stroke i think.

It looks identical.  And 105 hp would hafta be at the crank.  They listed the old 18r @ 150 hp, so keep that in mind too.  I've had one of these and it was a complete turd, no power at all.  With 4.10s and 215/75-15s I couldn't even go 65 on the freeway unless it was dead flat, and it had good compression.  I don't wanna bag, but the only reason to run one of these is if you can't pony up the cash for a 22r.  A hybrid with toyota only parts will utterly embarass this engine.
RIP KYOTA

well, depends on the 18R also.  they weren't torque engines(had less stroke, only about 2.0l i think), but it was made in several configurations, most notably the 18R-G that made about 140hp, and often pushed much higher. better swap for a celica though, and kind of hard to find since it was never sold in the US.

the 18R-C that was sold in pickups and celicas here from '73-74 made about 100hp or so, but low on the torque.

I have a 21ru in my 85 toyota and it runs amazing. All the power I need. I run 37s with 4:11 gears and I can roast them on dry pavment. As far as Im concerned it out preforms the 22r that I pulled.
