I'm going insane
« on: Feb 28, 2005, 09:44:34 PM »
This is driving me insane, I don't want to jump on things and waste money on things I don't need, but I don't know what I need.

Here's a list of symptoms/problems:

- I'm losing coolant, at a fast rate
- The coolant is being pushed out into the overflow
- If I pop the radiator cap, mass amounts of steam burst out the overflow
- Occasionally it will suck coolant in instead of blowing it out
- When my truck first gets up to operating temperature, I still won't have any heat, then my temperature will rise (close to overheating), heat will start coming out the vents, and my temperature goes back down
- When I turn off my truck, I can hear bubbles being blown in the overflow tank and I can see the steam coming out of the hose
- Everynow and then it will work perfectly, I'm putting in atleast a gallon of coolant a day.

try the thermostat, if it's not stuck, then try the clutch fan. I went through the cooling system on my car, started @ the thermostat, there was none, timing was perfect, radiator blew, got a new radiator, still overheated, new water pump, still overheated, so I replaced the clutch fan, all good.

I'm not overheating at all.  I just have LOTS of back pressure in my coolant system.  It only overheats when it blows out all the coolant.

i promise you you have a blowed head gasket
i know you just replaced it but i have had bad gaskets befor,  and its possible you have a crack near your intake valve port

Id also check the plate at the back of the head.  I holds in coolant and has a passagway for the egr.  If the gasket splits between the coolant and exhaust instant pressure.  Ive had it happen before.

Are you saying there is a gasket at the EGR that could be causing this?

I know there's a massive chance it's a cracked head, I just don't want to buy a new head and have the same problem.

When I was loosing a gallon a day it was a head gasket, and cracked head.  If it hasnt been mentioned check the color of your oil or just remove the oil dranin plug it will dump coolant then the oil will follow.     Oh yah loosing that much...it has to go somewhere out the tailpipe or in the oil pan.

I hate to be a jerk, but reading comprehension is lacking in this thread.  Read, then post.

I said a couple times where it's losing coolant.  I know the gasket is fine, but I also know the head is probably cracked.  I just wanted to know other than a cracked head, what could cause back pressure.

I really don't think it could be anything else (unless the block is cracked??), as far as the the coolant going in and out of the over flow depends on the level of the coolant.  If the level is low the heater wont blow heat until whats left of the coolant is circulated into your heater/motor causing the the heater to work and the temp drop on the motor.  If there is a hole or leak in the timing chain cover it would mix the coolant and oil (milky oil).  But as far as the weird pressure you are describing it is because of the varying levels of coolant I would say.  Check your oil and start from there.  If you can find out where its going then you can start the whole process of elimination.

I yanked the thermostat today so it wouldn't build so much pressure.  It still pukes a little.  It's not a mystery of where the coolant is going, it's a mystery of WHY it is puking it.

There is a plate that bolts to the very back of the head.  There are 5 bolts holding it on.  Its a pita to get to but its doable.  The egr gasses actually pass through the plate through a tube that is cast into the plate.  the plates main purpose is to crack if there isnt enough antifreeze in the coolant.

And coolant runs through this passage as well?  If there's a gasket there dividing the too, I will check that out, that would definitely cause a lot of pressure in the coolant system.

Coolant doesnt run through a passage int he plate there is a hole probobly 3"x4" that the plate is exposed to coolant directly.  There is a tube basically cast into the plate that the exhaust passes through.  If the gasket has blown between the egrpassage and the water jacket it will sause a shizzy load of pressure in the radiator.  When mine went it blew a seam out of the top radiator tank.

What he said ^ Is exactly what I was gonna say, I had the same problem on my 89 done the exact same thing head gasket was bad letting exhaust gas into my water jacket I was not running hot just had a lot of pressure. Best way I could tell you to check it is to start it up cold of coarse w/ the cap off and see if ya see bubbles coming up in the radiator.

do you already have the 2 stage toy stat in there? the guys at my local toy stealer agree that not having this type of stat is the main contributing factor to cooling and head gasket problems. the word must be getting out because the toy parts guy can't keep them in stock. the first changes i make in a buildup is to install this stat and a new 3 core radiator. for $135 it saves alot of pain.
