86 runner hard to start cold
« on: Dec 14, 2011, 02:18:53 PM »
Any help would be great.

It starts after a couple times bumping it and then it will start but not to quick you have to crank it a little.  After its hot it starts no prob.

i replaced the sensor that tells the cold start injector when the engine it hot or cold last, that fixed it last time but i don't know now.

Thanks martin

check the cold start injector itself. it could be bad.  I've had 2 bad ones in 2 different trucks now.

Several years ago I had a similar, but worse problem with my '88 4Runner. Under 30 degrees it cranked, but wouldn't start. When the ambient temp increased it would start fine. I took it to my local Toyota dealer and left it overnight, telling them they had to try to start it first thing in the morning or they wouldn't experience the problem. They charged me a diagnostic fee and told me it was fine. I suspect the mechanic was not an early riser. The following morning at my house it wouldn't start. I replaced the cold start injector with one I got off Ebay and my 4Runner has started fine ever since.

Instead of replacing the sensor, here is what I do. Wire in a push button (like a horn) to the cold start injector. All you have to do is push the button once and you will hear the injector click and then the engine will start. You can hide the button if you want and it works as a theft deterrent.
