I want a better Tranny!
« on: Jul 01, 2002, 04:00:11 PM »
I read a couple places that a 86-88 Toy Tranny will bolt up directly to my 83 Truck and that the only mods I would need to do is move back the Crosmember. I also read that these trannys are much smoother shifting and have better designing and are not prone to failure like my current tranny.  Can anyone verify if this is true!

ya lets call and bug marlin on the phone :shake: :shake: the tranny is around 4.25" longer too, so you need to shorten the rear driveshaft and lengthen the front too. yes the 84 up trannys are better then the older ones, allthough I had no trouble with my 1982 tranny, it's now in a buddys truck still going strong

ya, I'm curious too.

Let me know what you find 83toyboy.

and if they are compatible, then can I assume that a early tranny will bolt up to a 22R?  (as opposed to the 20R)?

thanks Seabass  (again)

the bolt pattern is what I was curious about.

While on the subject of trannies, are there any techniques for 'testing' them while on the bench?
I mean, anything other than giving it a spin in all gears?

One of these days I'll figure this 'stuff' out.   8)

other then what you said, I don't know..........just make sure [if you can] to find a good trust worthy guy to buy from, if rebuilt, right here is Marlin  if used.....I have a great rep on used parts, but no i don't have any 4x trannys for sale, there are allot of good guys selling used parts on the net, ask for references, or ask the net on a bb if a certin guy you are buying from is reputable or not.good luck!

that's part of the problem... I 'acquired' one of unknown history... I hate to sell it to someone and have it turn out to be crap.  As I understand it, just to open them up and have a look is like $285 in parts for re-assembly.

I have another that was supposed to have been rebuilt but lost 5th gear about 20 miles down the road.  It's still a great 4 spd!    :b_s:

I guess they're good for cores!

thanks again... and sorry 83toyboy for getting off topic.
