suspension...Whats the best?
« on: May 30, 2002, 09:32:47 AM »
Im building up an 81 toyota 4x4. I want to use it for rockcrawling. What are your suggestions for suspension set-ups. I've seen what Allpro and AOR has. I would like to know what you guys run,  and the Pro's and Con's of your set-ups. Thanks alot   Sean

No such thing as a perfect suspensino or we'd all be runnin it..

depends on your situation. I run 44044's up front and a custon mazda/alcan/toyota with toy main leaf upside as a full 3/4 elliptical setup

my other rig runs stock YJ rears up front and in the rear front YJ's with an extra leaf in it.

All low buch stuff..

Marlin uses Genuine Alcans as well. They flex really good!

You can get them from our good buddies over at Advanced Off Road Research.
Ask for Randy and tell him BigMike sent you from the Marlin Crawler Online Forum!!

I'm running 4" superlift springs currently. They are kinda stiff and only settled about an inch or so but my shackle angle is pretty verticle. I am planning on Wagoneer springs but had to put everything on hold when my engine took a dump.

44044's in the front and Allpro's 5" springs in the rear.  going to take out the botom leaf of the Allpro's to settle them down a bit.
Might also try a buggie leaf after i finis everything else i have going

I have to agree with Brandon... there is no Perfect Suspension.  Its all very dependent on your driving style and terrain.

While I'm running Alcans (very happy with), the hot set up seems to be the 44044 up front and AllPro in the rear.

Some folks have had great results running Toy rears in the front also.

I do suggest you do some research (such as POR archives and checking out other folks rigs) before you pony up the bucks for anything or start hacking off spring mounts.

take care...  and let us know your final choice!

I have heard a lot of good things about Downey springs, (with the exception of the rears tend to sag after a while). They are cheap, and super soft. Also, if you're interested in running a longer spring in the rear, you can order a set of springs for an 89-95 toyota 4x4. They are 4 or 5" longer. Every body who runs them says that they are the softest spring, right out of the box, and at 200$ a set, you can't beat those prices.

I'm a cheap b*std.  Anything I can get I use.  I picked up some Downey 3" rears and cut the stock rears in half bought u-bolts and used the old square ones to mount a coulple of the cut leafs on the frame just in front of the bump stop.  Then cut a foot off the back (frame) so the springs stick out a bit.  I also took some flat stock and made 4" shackles.  The front is just chevy springs i got for free.  the rear flexes pretty well though.  All together I spent maybee $200.   I't sounds like you might have more "flow" than me so you might not want to take advantage of the "Garbage man philosophy"

I don't know, I have heard of some prietty flexy suspension systems that were the result of the "I have a cool idea, a torch, a chop saw and a welder" philosophy.

i was going to go with the "doulble spring" in the back too.  but i was discouraged by a lot of people not to.   :-/

they claimed that the rear hops going up hill and that the springs can't take it.  i keep waiting to see more people on the trail with the set up to ask them how they like it.   ???
maybe traction bars would prevent the wheel hop they talk about. :.order:
