oil pump priming
« on: Apr 02, 2012, 09:24:38 PM »
I just put this chevy 350 engine into my rig and primed the pump and ran it. there were no problem. Later i found out i put the wrong oil pump in. So i just changed it out and fired it up not thinking of priming the new pump. i started it up and it had 0 oil pressure for 5 seconds then shot up to 70 pounds. the engine sounds great no problems. how much damage did i do.

Probably little to none. If it really bugs you, pull the oil filter, cut it open and look for debris.

What was wrong with the first pump? How long did it run with the wrong pump?

I ran it for a couple of months. It had a 5/8 pickup tube. The one i just put on has a 3/4 pickup tube. The right one for the engine. I also went with the high volume pump, it gives a little more pressure. The engine runs great, you guys are right though. i called a good engine builder and he said, its like you changed the oil you will have no problems. such a relief. The engine sounds good too.
