Get your 16 yr old something that has airbags, 4 cylinders and is dependable - and in that order of importance. Weather you have your kid pay for part or all of it, that depends on you and what kind of kid you have and weather they will appreciate it or not. Personally, I'd look for an old honda with some miles left in it - they can be had for cheap where I live.
