front crank seal help!!!!
« on: Mar 11, 2012, 08:56:00 PM »
Ok. So my front seal behind my crank pully was leaking. I got a new oil pump o ring and main seal from toyota. One i got the pully off i discovered that it already had a repair sleeve that was groved so i replaced the pully while i was in there. I did everything that i was supposed to. I completely cleaned everuthing. I put clean oil on all surfaces torqued the bolt to 116 lbs. And it is still leaking. Any ideas? This is the first time i have done this so my best guess is that i did something wrong. I just dont know what.

Slowly from behind the pully. Not from the pump.

So remove the pully and hit the seal again. I got it fully seated.

those seals are evil... also, make sure it is a fctory toyota seal, they are a lot thicker than the auto parts stores seals..... "glue" it into place before install with some vaseline

some ppl put silicone in before they tap them in. If it leaks from a groove, i tap a new seal in PAST the orig spot the old one sat, maybe a 1/8th inch further in. It makes the seal ride on a different spot on the crank. A little silicone wouldnt hurt i imagine either.

he said its fully seated, MIGHT be the problem, I think they are supposed to be installed to a certain depth

it doesnt matter the depth, the crank is the same diameter in that spot, so it wouldnt matter. It gets a groove fro running in one spot for 200k, then you go pyut a new seal, when the seal wasnt even bad, it just had a gap because of a groove. You need to make the seal ride in a different spot, so its not sitting in the groove. Or a speedi sleeve, but I hate those things and never have good luck with them.

When i pulled the pully it already had a sleeve that was grooved so i threw that pully away and bought another one from the local toyota dealership. So the seal was brand new and from the toyota dealeeship, the pully is from the dealeeship and brand new. I guess im gonna get another seal and do it again. I just wish i new what went wrong this time so it doesnt leak again. :shocking:

I put clean oil on the seal lip. I figured with both the pully and repair sleeve groved that the pully was junk. Its aleeady gone.

some seals have a spring on the inside of the lip, if you dont put grease on it, sometimes driving it in will make the spring come off
