Scrapping transmissions?
« on: Dec 25, 2011, 11:42:31 PM »
Well I'm not sure where to put this so I figured I'd put it here since it kind of relates. So I have an old 4-speed out of my old 1st gen just sitting around, and I also know where I can get some Toyota trannys dirt cheap. So I was debating on scrapping them for money at the local scrap yard. I was wondering then, if I take all the guts out what does the tranny cases themselves weigh, and are they solid aluminum? I want to make sure it's worth my time.

it all depends on how much the yard is gonna pay for the aluminum. call around and see. i took in 112 lbs of aluminum once and got like 11 dollars. it was totally not worth my time

around here its totaly worth the time to clean the aluminum.  right now cans are 75cents per lb dirty alum is 1.15 per lb. and cleaned alum is 1.85lb as of saturday.  most yards will take a magnent to it so get every stud and steel piece out of your price will suffer

Man, that's really good.  I'm only getting .30 per pound, and that's CNC shavings, the cleanest of the clean!
