Blinkers wont work!
« on: Dec 05, 2011, 03:49:30 PM »
I have tried EVERYTHING i can think of. I have:
Replaced the whole switch.
Replaced the relay on the passenger side.
Put in a new fuse.
Put new bulbs in.

I am so lost and out of ideas.

Anyone?

was your fuse blown? may have a ground issue somewhere.  Check the back of your signals for corrosion

i checked my fuses and even replaced it.
and there is no corrosion
this thing was a wiring nightmare when i got it.
it was weird, i put a new switch in and then they started working but the my headlights werent working. i wiggled the connectors and then my blinkers stopped working but now my headlights work.

if you wiggled it and you blinkers quit but your heads work now id go with the switch pull it apart and put a lil dielectric grease in it then re connect....check all your prongs to be sure they are fully seated in the connector you may have one or 2 loose and not contacted fully

Mine only work some times...  Whe I forst got my '80 the heater blower and tach were intermitent. This really sucked in the super cold weahter we have here when the defrost only huffed a little draft out from the heat rising.  I took everything apart to look for the problem, found nothing apparent and had to drive it so I put it all back.  It has worked ever since. Sometimes things are just crusty and need unpluging and cleaning off.

I had 3 toggle switches and 1 one of them i still cant even figure out what it went to. i had a wire coming out of the firewall going to my fuse box? no idea what it was but my dad yanked it. hoping its an easy fix though

Do you hazards work?
No, then check the blinker flasher relay? (located on the pass side kick panel up under the dash)
Yes, check the switch inside the steering column(take off the steering wheel and then you can remove the whole switch assembly, take off the cover that the blinker arm goes into and clean the contacts)

Just trying to help, sorry if I reiterated everything again. My blinkers were not working when I got my truck. First, I replaced the relay and that fixed them(the universal relays are only like $2 so it might be worth buying another to make sure it is actually working). I later replaced the entire steering column switch assembly with a used one from another truck for intermittent wipers. The blinkers were not working when I first put it in and to get them working I had to take the switch(that the turn signal arm goes into) apart multiple of times to clean the contacts to get it working right, along with the high and low beam switch...Did you replace it with a used switch?

However, if your hazards aren't working either then I would think it is the flasher relay or wiring somewhere....

i did buy the whole switch and relay from the junkyard...so maybe that could be a contributing factor..  :dunno:

do the lights come on at all.  I have had problems where there was a short and the light would just come on but not flash.   The connection to the front light had been broken and the back light wasn't enough to allow the lights to blink.

start from the beginning again with a test light..make sure you have good grounds.
wiring gremlins suck...been spending the last 4 years trying to undo some past owners version of 'fixing' wiring on my truck :smack:
good chance your switch you bought at the JY was bad too.

I know on the early 80's trucks the blinker solenoid wont work unless both the front and rear turn signal lights are coming on.  It works off resistance and it takes both bulbs on to make it work.  As stated before you need to find that short.  Get a test light and start tracking down power  Id start with the turn signal switch and make sure that its getting power to begin with.
