Front Crossmember Removal
« on: Feb 15, 2005, 09:41:56 AM »
I was trying to get my skid plate mounted today, so I first started trying to extract a broken bolt the previous owner had left for me.  Things were going good, I had a hole drilled through the bolt, sprayed it with penetrating lube and even heated around the broken bolt.  I hammered in the bolt extracter and started to turn, and or course, it snapped.  Now I'm in an even worse place, because the extracter is too hard to drill through.  So my thoughts were that I could take care of this problem if I could remove the front crossmember on my IFS, so I could maybe get to the back of the bolt, knock the extracter out and continue drilling and retapping.  So how difficult is it to remove the front crossmember?  I see it's attached with 5 bolts, 2 on either side and 1 through the front differential.  Can I simply unbolt it, do what I have to do, and reinstall it, or am I looking at a major process to get it out?  Thanks!

Would I have to brace the front suspension at all, or can I just remove the crossmember if I support the truck on its frame rails?

Im not an expert on ifs but i would think you wouldn't need anything to brace it.  And it should all go on as it came off.

Ok, I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't gonna buckle or anything when I removed that support.  I didn't think it would, but I wanted to be certain.

you dont need a brace to remove that! i jsut took mine off when i did the lift! you just undo the bolts and your good to go! the frame might bend in on you! wish i would ahve known that!! :smack: but with everything still hooked up i dont know if it will move or not! its very simple to take off tho!
