square
« on: Jun 05, 2011, 09:49:56 PM »
Square driveline in front or just replace u-joints? Is the square mod better then stock? I have a 85, with the auto, and looks like in middle a carrier bearing.

Thanks

Hey man, so what exactly do you want to do make a square drive line for the front? Is your cv out?  Honestly it would be cheaper to a) buy a used driveline that's in good condition and build your own or b) get a long spline from marlin and just use a single u joint on it that way you dont have to worry about cv joints I did it and its great.

I'm running a square driveline up front, still using the double cardon joint. It cost me $35 and it has done me justice.

I dont care much for the square DL's if you plan on running 4wd High.... cv at the tcase with a round tube is much better. but to each his own....

Ya, I wanted maybe a square one in there to replace the cv with u-joint or go with and replace the cv joint and u-joints and keep it stock. I would get one from marlin but dont have that much yet.. , so you have the marlin one?

Thats good to hear, what about in 4wd high, can you go just as fast as the other driveline? so it makes a sound am ok with that

Why it would it matter if i ran in 4wd high over 40 mph? would it just click in square and in round no sound? Am just trying to see if its better to get rid of cv's ,and go with u-joints.

I added a 12'' slip from inchworm upfront to cv style and stock slip with cv in the rear. I can run over 80 mph in 4wd with no vibrations. With cv style you have less angle on the joints compared to running a single u joint and square shafts just have a tendency to vibrate more and clunk. To me it just seems more logical to have round shafts throughout.

Yeah my driveline looks like the daves off road one but instead of the really cool ag splines I have a tg long spline only cuz I already had it. If not I would have one just like the daves off road drive line I got up to about 45 with no problems but in all honesty unless your are in sand do you really need to go 80+ mph Im really happy with mine.

If you build a square D-line and it has slop in it, it is hard on the bearings on the output shafts of the T-case. Sometimes they last forever, sometimes one wheeling does them in. If they are not built true, that compounds the problem the problem.

you dont have a carrier bearing on the front drive shaft. If you have an Xtra cab then you have a 2 piece rear driveline with a carrier bearing in the middle....
