5.29s too much for 33's?
« on: May 18, 2011, 09:39:55 AM »
Hey guys, I have a 85 pickup with a 3" lift and 33" tires and I'm finally looking at swapping in some new gears.  I mainly use my rig as a hunting/farm/work truck and it rarely sees the highway.  Do you think that 5.29's are too much gear?  I'd like better performance when towing a trailer or going up steep hills, and I never go over 55mph anyway so top end speed isn't a problem.  What do you guys think?

Not at all!  I liked the gearing of my 4Runner when I rocked 33's and 5.29's.  Acutally felt like the motor had some HP

i'd say 5.29's are the right gear for you

just remember you need to drive on them 500 miles before you tow

I have also heard Marlin himself recommend 5.29s because among rock crawler Toyotas nowadays, the ratio has become so commonplace that your chances of finding a spare for a trail repair are not bad.  As an example, I have carried a spare 5.29 3rd member on a few trips in the past, and I would have shared it if need be, and certainly I am not the only one who has or does.

I agree with everybody else. When i built my truck 8 years ago i started with 33's and 529's. It worked awesome!!! Over the years i went bigger and bigger on tire size and never had to re-gear it again. Simply can't go wrong with 529's if you ask me. In fact i still have both original gear sets in my truck. I highly recommend having them installed by a professional, i did and never broke a set. I have tons of friends that had a buddy or they installed them themselves and it seems they all have broke a set more than once. I'm a HUGE fan of doin work yourself but installing gears i leave to a pro :twocents:

I agree, I have acess to a shop with a press and all of the measuring tools but I still think I'm going to go with built 3rds.  I would love to set them up myself but I just can't afford to replace anything if I screw up!
