steering wheel issue
« on: Mar 21, 2011, 03:50:26 PM »
So I first noticed this problem on my way back from Gilmer in January. The alignment of my steering wheel changed from the original staring position to clocked around 180 degrees. It started like that in Gilmer and by the time I got home it was back to its "normal" position, all the time still tracking down the road straight. It recently has done this again and is still clocked in the 180 degree position and has not returned back to the original position. The steering wheel is slowly working back to about 90 degrees out form the original position. I understand that wheeling will cause some wheel alignment/movement issues but this drastic? Ive asked around and no one seems to have an answer.  It seems to me to be a serious safety issue especially since Im DD'ing it as much as possible.

Whats the deal? Has anyone had this happen? Where do I start to troubleshoot? The truck has not been aligned since it has come out of the shop, but that is on the to do list shortly.

I have checked for anything that could be loose in the front end: hi steer links, pittman arm, and so on.......

Could it be a problem within the steering box itself?

Any guidance would be appreciated

Thanks

What do you drive? 180 is a lot but its done that to my truck when I had IFS, a lot of moving parts. But check for worn steering arms, links, tre's or anything bent.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

Both my trucks have done the same thing. I honestly have no idea what causes it though

i wonder if it's some how slipping on the steering shaft when turning the wheel hard.  I just took my steering wheel off to fix a few things and normally you need a puller to get it off.  But with just a few kick tugs and a bang it popped off the shaft.  Heck i even put it back on with a impact and had to take it off a few hrs later  (forgot something) and still didn't need to use a puller.

I would pull it and check the splines on the steering shaft.

Im telling ya, its IFS,common with so many moving parts. But there is a recall out for the steering rod relay on some of them too

Just installed my Grant Steering wheel which is used but the install kit is brand new. I needed a puller to get the OE steering wheel off. The splines looked fine when I pulled the wheel.

I still think that is is something to do with the IFS steering box....

Thanks for all the input guys. The truck is parked now with the interior torn out for some upgrades.
