High steer for drum brake fj40?
« on: Mar 20, 2011, 09:15:59 AM »
What needs to be done to high steer a drum brake fj40 axle? Can it be done with the drums?
Will mini truck knuckles fit on an old style drum brake fj40 axle and if so do the stock fj birfs still fit?
BTW this will be a right hand steer setup.
I searched to no avail.
Thanks.

I believe the early drum fj40 is a smaller steering arm bolt/stud/pin pattern than the mini/fj60 pattern.  Luke at 4x4 labs might offer a hysteer pattern for the smaller pattern don't quote me on that but give them a call on monday to check their options.  Also there is a guy in the northwest either oregon or washington who modifies the stock arms for higher steering, you might look into that.  It's pretty easy to convert to mini truck knuckles and disc brakes, I'd do that before wasting money on a smaller diameter patter hysteer, plus you can upgrade to the 25mm pin set up if needed. :twocents:

Wow. 4x4labs does have some obscure stuff. Thanks for the link.
The reason I asked about the drum brake option is because my buddy who is using this axle is putting it under a 1968 Land Rover lr109. He is wanting it to look stock-ish, but Rover axles are pretty weak. Toy axles look sort of correct. Not sure if he wants to do drums cause that's how they were stock. He's actually running an fj60 rear which is a huge upgrade from the Rover stuff. This is not a crawler by any means.

Seems like the FJ60 axle is quite a bit wider than the FJ40, soo the rear tires are gonna stick out the sides some.. Stock 40 axles might be a better fit, and can be had for a song.
Food for thought

The fj60 rear axle is about 3" wider than the fj40 front, so he can either use spacers or a widening kit. A matching fj60 front axle would have been ideal but we were unable to find one in about 3 months. The rear was a great deal too at $100 with new brakes and gears.
Like always I'm sure there will be a ton of them now that we aren't looking for one  :pirate:

Yeah that was a smokin deal, I would have gone with the FJ60's too if they were a little more available

Not many rigs nowadays have drum brakes and I think your buddy is gonna figure out that even on a stock rig they won't perform well and is gonna want to do a disc conversion.
