87 SAS
« on: Jan 25, 2011, 06:38:46 AM »
Alright so here's the deal, I'm trading my mutually stock 87 sami with a rod knocking in it that I was planin on Sellin for 500 for a running 89 yota that is flat out ugly with no bed and tiny tires but it comes with Chevy springs and a brand new trail gear sas kit and the axle.. good idea or bad??  The axle that comes with it  has 4.30 gears though, my rear has 410 and it also comes with brand new 4 inch trail gear springs, anyways the rear on the 89 has 4.56 that he said will line up and I can find another v6 rear with 4.56 gears that will line up to the front.. is this a goodbdeal or bad? The kit is brand new never been used as well as the trail gear springs

Sounds like a great deal to me, is the drivetrain still good on the truck? how many miles on it?

Idk and I really don't care. All I really want is the axle swap and the springs.. that itself is worth a lot. Now anybody have any knowledge about that gear problem I got?

Are you saying you want to get another v6 third and put it in the front?

yes, it has to get setup though. you can run any toyota locker with any gear ratio as long as it's a 4 cyl locker in a 4 cyl third or a v6 locker in a v6 third. or v6 locker in hp third.

yes pull the gears and put the correct ones in. the catch is the gears have the be setup to certain specs. so my suggestion is either go to the jujnkyard and find the right gear ratio 3rd member or bring your 3rd to a shop and have them "regear" it with the right ratio.

Unless you feel confident setting up the gears yourself just find a complete third member with the right gears.

So if I just went to the junkyard and found to third members with the same ratios I could put them on my axles and be done with it?

Make sure you get a 4cyl third if you're putting it in the front! So the rear already has 4.56s in it? and you're gonna get a third for the front (from the junkyard) with 4.56s aswell?

No the rear in the v6 does, the rear in mine has 410 and the donor axle has 430.. is that an off ratio?

So find a third for the front that has either 4.10 or 4.56. 4.30 is kinda a wierd ratio so definately stick with 4.10 or 4.56.

It seems to me alot of the 3rd gen exta cabs with 3.0 and 5 speeds have 4.30 gears that is what my 93 has from factory.

Also there is a code on the inside of the driver door that will tell you what gear ratio the truck/4runner has.

I'm gonna have to check your theory there cause I have three 3rd gen trucks that came with the v6 sitting in my shop.

Well what would be a good ratio? And what would be the easiest way to regard this thing?

As long as you have a 4cyl third going in to a 4cyl housing and a v6 third going in to a v6/turbo housing.
A v6 third form your rear will not work in the front.
What do you mean by easiest way to regard this thing?

a v6 8inch 3rd member fits right in 4cyl housings. such as a 79-85 toy front axle.

i think your refering to 4cyl gears going into 4cyl 3rd member cases and v6 gears going into v6 3rd member cases. this last statement is general true but there is a way to interchange the gears and 3rd member cases. it has been done, do a search if you are interested in it. i believe it can be found in the toyota faq on pirate. i hope this helps.

So the donor axle "supposedly" has 430 gears.. how could I find out for sure its from an 83 yota so if I could find some 410s could I put um in the front. Sorry yall I'm really confused!hah

bamajojo you need to have matching gears! so just find two 8inch 3rd members with match gear ratios and use them. also 4.30's were not stock in 83 so either someone put those in or the person that told you they were 4.30's was lieing. toyota 8inch third members can be run front or rear so just make sure they are matching front and rear.
