SR5 gauge cluster
« on: Jan 06, 2007, 06:51:39 AM »
Hello,
Was wondering does anyone or has anyone know of how to change from a 1980 standard gauge cluster to upgrade to an 1982 SR5 gauge cluster the 1980 does not have a tach and the newer 1982 does I want to use this as I like the factory look. I tried using a multimeter, Chilton Manual, and a Haynes Manual. But they didn't help to much has anyone tried this.
Thanks
Michael
BTW Any 1980-1983 pickups for sale in the Maryland, VA, WV, and pa area let me know I may be interested.

if the plugs on the back are the same  all you gotta do is  remove the old one and  plug the sr5 one in

early plugs are round,   later plugs are kinda square

i recently found one for my 79  and it  popped right in

i've just swapped a '79 cluster with a tach in to replace my non tach '80 cluster.  everything else seems to work but the tach "pins" itself all the way clockwise as soon as teh key is turned to ON.  if anyone has any thoughts it would be most appreciated.  i've done quite a bit of searching and come up with nil.
TIA

if  i remember  correctly  its  pin number  10  on the back of the cluster  thats supposed to be the signal wire,  you  are oviously  getting  full 12 volts   to the signal wire,

Further study, still pegs.  there are three inputs to the tach that i can trace on the back of the circuit board.  don't have the written plug numbers handy but lookers left hole/screw->blk/wht wire=ground, center hole/screw->yellow= ign. powered, right screw->#10=supposed to be tach read from ignitor right?  even with nothing going to the right screw the tach pegs with ign on.  does this hint that my cluster has a bad tach?  i ran a wire from yellow ignitor/coil wire to the right tach input, still same result.
of further note to anyone putting a DLX/Sport cluster into the base 79-80, i also noticed a small resistor on the circut board on the DLX in what appears to be the oil pressure idot light.  i'm guessing this has to do with the DLX having an idiot light and oil pressure gauge.  the base cluster has a jump built into the board.  other than that, everything is the same.  i have the parts rig the DLX cluster came from and all the wire are teh same colors to the same #'d slots.

You should be able to just plug it in. But you need to get some sensors off the SR5 truck for it to work properly. You need the oil pressure sensor, and the other one on that side of the block. I can't remember what it is right now.

yes you can.   then go to your auto parts house and get yourself a manual oil guage and install it.
