Question for any Mig Welder techies out there?
« on: Sep 26, 2011, 09:05:26 PM »
I have a Hobart 187 handler that will not start an arc on the highest heat setting. It will weld just fine throughout all other settings. The weird part is it feeds wire and gas flows just no arc. There is really no other issue. I can flip it to 6 and it welds fine. swithch it to 7 and no arc, back to 6 and its fine. Called the tech department and they basically told me that that is pretty much impossible because if the wire is feeding than there is power to create an arc. It would be more believable if there was no arc at all.
Anyone have this issue? Or an idea?
BTW it has been this way since as far as I have owned it, I just never went to its highest heat until I did my steering box mount about 4 years ago.

That "tap" is not making contact.

Does that explain why it is just happening on one setting? I don't get why this would be an isolated thing and not throughout all the settings if there was no contact being made.

Not familiar with "tap" contact

Tapped means its setup with only 4-7 different volts you can select. Its just a switch, each one has its own contact.
