oh no!
« on: Jun 05, 2004, 10:01:18 AM »
i was kinda checking over my pickup yesterday and i saw something i hadn't noticed before.  i have a little stain of gear oil coming out from where the end of the axle meets the brake drum on the driver's side.  i might need to do the seals.

now, here's where it gets tricky.  a few years back, the PO said his neighbor backed into him.  it bent the rear driver's side wheel and put a good dent into the quarter panel and bed.  since then, either because of me using junkyard wheels or having a bent axle shaft, that wheel has had a moderate wobble, which probably caused the seal to go.

any suggestions on checking for a bent axle?

first thing is to remove the axle.lay the axle on a flat suface like a bench with the flange hanging off of the table roll the axle back and forth if you see the axle flange where the wheel mounts to it woblle or  out of round replace it.thats the cheapest way to tell

Put the rear on jack stands, pull the wheel on the side in question, pull the brake drum, using a dial indicator check the face of the axle flange for runout.

dude , that axle flange is bent
being hit hard enough to bend the wheel, yep its tweeked,  you could use a dial indicator but it probably wouldnt show more than a few thousandths :.order:
just replace that axle  or take it to a machine shop and have them remove the studs and turn the flange back true :driving:
