???'s about Quick-Loks vs. Detroit Locker
« on: Oct 28, 2002, 02:45:27 AM »
I will be using a Quik-lok in the front of my truck and was going to install a full detroit in the back. The rear is a swapped in V-6 and I heard there were problems with lock-rights and quik-loks in V-6 diffs. Something about wearing out the diff case itself. Have any of you had bad experiences in the v-6 diff. I do have a few friends running Quik-lok type lockers in both 4-cyl. diffs with no problems. I do like the price savings but not worth it if it's gonna wear out in a relatively short time.
Thanks in advance

Quik-lok is like an E-Z locker or Lock-rite.
So has any one had a problem running these in a V-6 diff??

back when i was trying to decide what locker to run in the front of my rig there was a lot of talk about lockers front and rear.

anyway,  cruzer dave ran one in his v6 rear and he didn't sound too impressed.

it's on this thread.

HMMM?

I am at the shop right now and I just showed Dave this, and he says his computer at home crashed and he has not been able to get online for almost a month.

But he said he will try to get on soon and give some more input-

It seems Dave didn't like re-using the stock side gears in the v-6 set-up. What's the problem with the stock side gears???  :nerv:

WOw...I never heard of the case itself wearing out.  I've had a Lock RIght in the rear of my V6/turbo 4x4 for three years now without any problems at all.  I installed it myself using a coffee can as a stand for the 3rd member and chinese hand tools...in a truck with 110k on it.

I re-used the side gears(you remove the spider gears completely) and flipped them left to right as per the instructions(so the fresh coast side of the teeth becomes the driven side that mates with the drive side of the Lock-RIght halves), and haven't had a problem since.

Actually, I probably have 95% street miles, around town driving, etc. on it.  I moved 1200 miles pulling a 3000 lb UHAUL trailer with it too, and recently pulled a 2200 lb. subaru legacy over Vail pass in CO on I-70(5k RPM in 2nd gear!) without a hitch.

The 5% I have used it off road were hard miles, sand wash blasting to rock and crawling in low range to wide open sand dune action, floating valves and landing at full throttle.

I recently changed the oil in the rear end for the first time since I installed the locker and found no flakes or metal dust in the oil.

I think they work fine.
