Toyota newbie checking in
« on: Sep 22, 2010, 12:13:12 PM »
Hello.
I am not only new to this forum but a new Toyota owner as well.  A friend of mine owned this 85 toyota and it overheated on her this summer.  She said it was mine if I would tow it home so here it is .  It is an 85 4x4 longbed extra cab with 140 K miles.  It has a manual trans and a turbo efi motor with a knock.  I am hoping to have it on the road this winter and I am here to learn.

:welcome: from Northern California. 85 is a great year to start with and that looks like its in really good shape. What are your plans to get it running? Are you going to keep the turbo or just swap in a nonturbo 22RE?

My plan is to rebuild the current motor. Any reason not to?

Nope. Seems to be a mix bag for people. Some don't like to run turbos for reliability reasons, but just as many like them. I've never owned one myself but I've driven a few and they are fun. Definitely would like to own one someday. Did they swap in the digital gauges too or does it still have the regular 85 gauges?

As far as I know everything on this is stock.  All original 85 gauges.  One little turbo boost light.

:welcome: KEEP THE TURBO!!!! It has double the power of the 3.0 V6 and puts the 22re in its place. Just rebuild it and don't let that trans out of your sight it is the hottest trans bar none.  I loved my turbo 4Runner for the power it had even with 35's. I could climb the Grapevine in CA. at 75mph no sweat and the only mod in the diffs beside lockers were 4.88's, it was an auto so you will be in even better shape powerwise.
