HELP! '91 R150 Problem
« on: Feb 11, 2010, 11:38:38 PM »
:help: I have a '91 toy only 100K miles w/3vz and manual 5 speed R150 I think. It suddenly started acting up one day, makes a growling noise(not loud) in neutral, stops making the noise if you push the clutch, in 1st or 2nd it kind of acts like it's in two gears or something, will go smooth for a little ways then jerk a couple times like something catches then go smooth again. same thing in reverse, 3rd 4th and 5th are ok, drove it 5 miles to my dad's shop keeping it in those gears and not a problem.put it in 1st to pull in the shop and jerk, jerk! Pulled the shift lever out and made sure the shifter was pushing all the way and it seemed to be, although the shifter bushing is worn. Thought maybe the 1st/2nd shift fork was bad as that seems to be a problem with these. Pulled the tranny out and pulled the case off and it all looks fine, nothing that I can see out of place or worn excessively. The reverse linkage seems to be loose to me but that appears more like design than wear. I have considered the input/output bearing ( the bearing between the input and output shaft) but haven't pulled that apart yet. Anybody have any other ideas or heard of anything like this before?  :wall:
Thanks for any input!

Mine did the same thing. The 3rd gear sycro was toast for a long time. Then one day it died. Id put it in reverse and it would still be in a forward gear. I just got a used trans for 225 bucks.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

Typically if it does it when clutch is disengaged it one of 2 things.  A bad input bearing on trans or pilot bearing in the back of the crank.  Tho I would lean towards input bearing since most often when a pilot goes out it whines.

Thanks for the replies guys! (Hey it rhymes!) Took the tranny the rest of the way apart and the only thing I found was the 1st gear syncro had been slipping on the three notches on the back side where it locks onto the gear that is moved by the shifter fork.  I'm not sure why the 1st gear syncro would cause the jerking in second and reverse or why the noise in neutral. That's the only thing that's got me stumped. The noise in neutral was only with the clutch ?engaged? (not pushing it) so I don't think it could be the pilot bearing as the shaft and flywheel would be turning together then. The input bearing looks and feels fine/smooth. I would like to order a new syncro and put it back together but am afraid the problem may not be entirely gone.

Oh, another thing, for a long time, the tranny would sometimes pop out of first gear when you let out the clutch, so that would coincide with the 1st gear syncro going bad I think.

Just an update this thread in case someone out there runs into the same prob. I called and talked to the Guru (Marlin) and he said it was likely the THIRD gear syncro ( My mistake in the previous post, I said the first gear syncro was bad) and was likely caused by the Bearing cover plate wearing, leaving too much play in the main shaft. I inspected it closely and confirmed he was right (Of Course). I replaced the plate with the heavy duty bearing plate he sells along with the new shifting fork and 3rd syncro and a couple of seals and put it all back together and it works flawlessly. Much tighter shifting and it no longer pops out of first. Excellent help from MarlinCrawler!!!!!
Thanks!

Larry
