tranny questions
« on: Dec 14, 2004, 11:34:41 AM »
i have a w56 from an 85 in my truck .  i was wondering if there is anyway to rebuild it with a lower gear ratio for 1st gear?

i have never found any turbo trucks in my area so i can't get that transmission.  other wise i would try.  but i doubt it would bolt up to my supra bellhousing!

thanks :shocking:

There is an adapter to mate the R151F to a M series engine. Use the 5M bellhousing, flywheel, and clutch assy, this adapter and bolt up the turbo gearbox.

The 4x4 W56's have the lowest 1th gear ratio at 3.95:1. There are no lower ratios made.

mister tranny god!  would it be possible to have the great master of trannies make a lower first gear for the W56?  is there enough room in the case?

Yes, it would be possible to make a lower first gear by increasing the underdrive of the input/countershaft gear.
This is done by decreasing the diameter of the input to countershaft constant run gears [making it weaker], and increasing the diameter of the matching countershaft teeth.

This would give a lower 1th, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and rev ratios. To keep the 5th overdrive, the small gear would get smaller [weaker] and the large 5th gear would have to be made bigger. So we need a new input, c/shaft, both 5th gears--$$$$$

To change just the 1th gear would require a finer, weaker 1th gear set and require a new c/shaft and 1th gear.
If i lowered just the 1th gear to say 4.50:1, then what about the stock 2.33 2nd gear. Way to much of a jump.

There are no easy ways to change the ratio----
