Hard to start 22re
« on: Apr 02, 2010, 04:42:24 PM »
I just bought a 1987 21' Toyota Sunraider motorhome. It has 55k miles and runs like a top. My only issue is that when it sits for a day or so, it takes multiple attempts to get it to start. Once it's running, all is good. Anyone else had this experience? I was told maybe a fuel pump, check valve, or an engine temp sensor  :dunno:

x2, or maybe  fuel filter goin bad, or slight timing issue

try disconnecting the cold start to see if it makes a difference. to test timing, unscrew the bolt that keeps it tight against the engine and rotate the distributor.

disconnect the plug the off of the cold start, run two wires to it, one hot, one ground, and touch to two connectors and see if you hear it click, if it clicks, good chance its good.  if not, let me know, i have two of them in my tool box.

Thanks for the offer! I'll try that tomorrow. I just need to figure out where that is :hammer:

You can quickly test the fuel pump as well by jumping the fuel pump check connection located on the driver side fender; plug rectangular in shape; generally near the power steering resevoir.  There is some information around the forum and I believe on 4x4wire.com website

I did the fuel pump jumper deal and expected that to have an effect, but it didn't. I figured that an injector was bleeding off or that the fuel was escaping back to the tank and emptying the fuel rail, but having the pump running should have made that go away. So as far as checking to see if the cold start injector is working, I assume that I can simply remove it from it's hole and leave the wiring and fuel line connected and see if it sprays fuel?
I'm a bit leery of putting a full 12 volts to it for a test as mentioned above. I am an electrical moron, but I know Jeep injectors only use 5 volts.

So I pulled the cold start injector and turned the engine over. I got no fuel or popping from the injector. It's about 50 degrees outside. So I assume either the injector is bad or possibly the timer. Any more ideas? I know that there is a timer and coolant temp sensor involved in this setup as well. Can these be tested with an ohm meter and if so what resistance is correct?

your on the right track buddy, the cold start pulls signal from the temp sensor, also a basic tune up on a new vehicle is always a good way to take care of the unknown

Thank you sir. I'm going to go to the local junkyard and snag an injector and temp sensor and see what happens.

If anyone has a factory service manual, could you please tell me the proper ohm resistance for the cold start injector, the coolant temp sensor, and the cold start injector timer.
I'm going to buy a manual, but I want to figure this out today and can't get one on Sunday.

Turned out to be the coolant temp sensor. The injector and timer switch tested fine on the ohm meter. The temp sensor tested a bit out of range at 50 degrees, like 5 when it should have been three, but when I tested it at operating temp, it should have been about .02 and was 256 ohms. Toyota wanted 95 bucks for it, Shucks wanted 17. I'm not that die hard toy  :)
