Axle under swap on 2WD yota.
« on: Apr 04, 2010, 11:15:32 PM »
Are all 2WD yota axle smaller in diameter than 4WD? Mine is not a 3 inch axle like I thought it was.... now my truck is all ripped apart and the parts won't fit.... any ideas?
You would be amazed where an 89 yota 2WD can go with a lift and a locker.....

Yes. One exception might be the Prerunner Tacomas, however I am not 100% certain on that. Get a 4WD rear axle from a junkyard, the Marlin or the Pirate classifieds. They are cheap and plentiful.

I got a stock axle out of my 85 runner. seals and bearings were replaced 20k miles ago. minus the third member.. Trying to keep that as as spare for the trails.

I have 2 spare trucks... I have an 82 with both axles, but it's pretty beat up. I also have an 84 that hasn't moved for 10 years. I guess I'll have to start raping the 84 for parts now. Both trucks are 4WD that I was going to use anyway to swap my 2WD to a 4WD.

Also... I have a Lock-Rite locker in the 2WD diff... and I'm assuming that it will be useless if I switch to a 4WD diff... am I right? I think mine is a 7.5'' diff and 4WD are 8''.... am I right on that aswell?

^ I believe so.

I have heard a few guys taking lockrights out of the front ifs carrieres, and putting them in the back of their 2wd.
You would probably be able to sell it to someone who wants it for their 2wd, or maybe even for the front of their ifs rigs.

Hmmm... didn't know that. Thanks. I hope I can sell that off..... or else it's 450 bucks wasted. It's only been in the truck since october.
