SR5 Cluster really plug and play?
« on: Oct 25, 2011, 11:56:32 PM »
I did a search and have found several post stating that an SR5 cluster is plug and play with the exception of the oil sending unit.  I then read another one that states you have to run a separate wire from the coil to port 6 on the cluster to get the tach to work.  My question is two fold. 1, are these the only two mods that you have to make for the "plug and play" swap or are there more? 2. What years will fit my 87 runner, will all 1st gen 4runners and trucks or just 4runner will work or only 87 4runners?  One other thing does it matter is the cluster is from a auto going into a manual transmission?  Thanks.

Yes the oil sending unit needs to be replaced, the wire may have to be run but can already be there and ready to go or it is there but not hooked up to the coil/ingniter. Any 1st gen 4runner or 2nd gen truck will work. The only one that is different is the turbos and V6. Even the 2wd trucks are the same.

If your truck is non-efi then you will have to run a separate tach line.

But a 2wd wouldn't have the 4WD light on it right?

I have a EFI 22RE so then I would not have to run a separate line right.  What if the cluster is out of a carburated truck?

I just did this swap on my 88 22RE pickup. Got the cluster and oil pressure sender from a 1985 4Runner. I don't know if it was EFI or carb.

Total plug & play for me. I also found a youtube video showing how to reset odometer so my mileage was the same as the one I took out.

I think the only difference on the turbo is it has a boost light and the V6 's can be adjusted so the tach will read correctly.

Thanks for that I didn't know why the line was not there.

Cool,  so then the cluster from my 82 sr5 pick up will swap into my 87 4runner with only changing the oil sending unit and having to run wire for tach because the truck is non-EFI.  Is this correct?  Secondly will the cluster from the 87 4runner go into the truck as a replacement?  I am planning to sell the truck after all.

I don't think your 82 will swap with an 87. We are talking 84 to 88 being swapable. (Is that a word ?)

1st gen 4Runner not 1st gen truck.

No you can't simply swap them over between generations, the dashes are different.  It would be a lot simpler and easier to just buy an SR5 cluster from a 2nd gen for your '87.

The 2nd gen trucks and 1st gen Runners use the same parts, a cluster from either one will work.
