1980 L43 to L52 Swap "Boot" Question??
« on: Nov 09, 2009, 02:51:48 PM »
I am almost ready to swap my side shift L43 to a top shift L-52 and will be enlarging the hole for the new tranny shifter. What do I do about the boot. Will it cover the larger hole or do I need a new boot set up
thanks

my 79 needed some clearancing of the tranny tunnel because the L43 wasnt as tall as the L52,  a body lift fixed that but Marlin told me he used a jack and a 4x4 to make enough room on several other trucks

i also had to move the hole for the shifter,  i just waited till the L52 was under there then cut what was in the way,  then used some sheet metal to fill where the old hole was and self tapping screws to hold it in

Here is how I did mine.
Measure.

and welded. Granted at the time all I had was a H.F. Welder. but it worked.

dude,  thats aweful tight, not much room for it to move around.  it would suck to have to replace the shift tower because it busted

you see in this pic how his tunnel is right against the top of the transmission??

thats where your tunnel needs to be clearanced,  you dont want to rub a hole in the top of your transmission

the L43 was not as tall as the L52

I did have a L43 in their when I got it. I now have a L50/52 Not sure. But it is the short 5 speed. I've had it likes this for over two years with no problems. Now granted it did self clearance a little. If I had to do it all over again. I would make sure it clears 1" all away around it. I haven't rubbed a hole in it. It looks tight but it clears about a Inch.
Don't mind the holes on the side. That was put their when the side shift was in it. I don't recall what boot I used. IT may be your regular 5 speed shifter boot.......or my old side shift one.
I have a Marlin 1200 HD Clutch and flywheel(pilot bears and HD bolts). Slave cylinder from a 82. Clutch fork from the 82.
It all bolts right in. I recall having to go by two longer bolts that go from the bell housing to the engine block. You may want to look into that before you get started. Save you the trouble of having to stop because the bolts are to short.
Mike

here you can see my shifter boot. On the dual cases...I cut them down to shorten them. Welded them together and it came out great.

and with a little dirt. One would never know. lol
O know not TG :yikes:

were you using the crossmember from the L43 or did you have to get one for a L50-L52?

the cross member is the exact same, they didnt change the crossmember between 79 and 83, the L43 and its tcase are both slightly shorter ( in height not length) than the L50 or 52,  Toyota enlarged the tranny tunnel after 1980

I'm using a TG or Marlin dual case Crossmember....it's been so long ago I forget. I'm not sure if that dropped it a little.
It should bolt right up.

IF you are asking....they are the same.
Now if the bolts don't line upon the Transfer case and crossmember...and if they are sitting farther back. You may have a newer (longer) tranny.
You can always measure the two tranny side by side. They should be the same length. L43-L52
Pull it. Might as well get after it.

Good job, After a few months of having the L52 in place on my 80 it Rubbed the crap out of the top of the transmission, I was trying to ram it in there and make it work temporarily. Swapped in a W56 and I have to cut more of the floor out :(
