22r/22re crank pulley
« on: Jul 27, 2009, 09:52:20 AM »
Does anyone know if the crank pulleys between the 22r and 22re are keyed differently(timing marks line up)?   We just installed a 22re into an 83 body, but had to installed the crank pulley from the older 22r and for some reason when I go set the timing, it boggs down.  I advance it a lot and it seems to run fine.  The history of the 22re is unknown.  I tried aligning the distributor several times and either I have to advance the timing way past the mark, or retard it way past the mark on the adjacent gear/tooth for it to run good.  So now I'm thinking either the crank pulley markings are different or the timing chain jumped 1 tooth.  Any suggestions?

best way to tell is use a flashlight and see when the #1 piston gets to the top and see where the mark is

some imported replacement engines had a different timing cover and also had a offset timing mark on the crank pulley

Make sure both valves are closed.
