Front axle issues
« on: Jul 27, 2009, 08:02:51 PM »
Hey guys, I recently rebuilt my front axle on my 85' 4Runner. I'm having some issues. I torqued the bearings to right at 30ft-lbs, so I don't think it's my bearings. I swapped over to the vented rotors and I'm still running the stock master cylinder(I know, I know...). I mount the tires and rims after I bled the brakes and it basically feels like there's waaaay too much drag. I put the fish scale on a stud, and it literally took the entire 40lbs to make the assembly turn over. I feel like my brake pads are what's causing the drag/friction. If it's the calipers sticking(rebuilt 4cylinder IFS calipers w/ new pads), are new calipers in order? If not, I guess I need to break the hubs back down and re-do my wheel bearings. Any advice??? :headscratch: Thanks, Wes

Pat

well it really is just a matter of you taking it about and seeing what is wrong..  Here on the internet we can feel it :yesnod:  but torquing the wheel bearing to 30lbs is not the way I have been doing it for years.. I take the nut in all while turning the rotor till I get the correct load..  I go over a smidge then back it off a tiny bit.. .. hopefully you check it before you put you calipers on..

Wait, what?  You torqued the main 54mm nut to 30ft lbs?

I misread something, so all is fixed now :D. I do have a driver side caliper that's sticking though :(. It's a rebuild, so I'll probably have to make a trip to autozone soon :(.

haha yeah I'm TRYING to get my money together to go... I'm getting back in school for nursing, and due to a recent lay off(June), money has been tight. If I can get someone to ride w/ me and split the gas, I can bring a cooler full of sandwich meat to eat off of for the weekend. I really wanna go bad!!!
