Welded Front spider's?
« on: Dec 21, 2008, 06:51:19 PM »
This may be a dumb question but its been bothering me ???. I'm going to be locking my truck up soon and I wanted to save $$$$ by welding the front axle up. When I weld the front will I still be able to disengage the 4x4?, or will it stay locked?  :outtahere:

yeah you can unlock it but it is a pain to turn and it will break stock birfs with out a problem.

Personally I've never had a locked front on a birfed rig let alone being welded, too risky. Well that's not true my Samurai had Lock Rights with stock birfs. That's as far as I'd go, I currently have a welded rear but that's cool. I actually have less fear locking the IFS front ends.

its actually easier on a axle to have a spool or a welded diff compaired to a lockright or a Detroit cause the locker only works when one tires slips causing it to build up momentum and then locking compaired to always being the same speed. the driving ability of it just sucks.

:headscratch: You are thinking wrong, a Detroit Locker is always locked until you corner and release the throttle. Then it unlocks, sometimes it doesn't even unlock in cornering downhill since it can't release the pressure. You are thinking of a limited slip which is easier on the drivetrain not harder since it "slips" and is why it isn't the best choice but will help out in a loose situation.

welded diffs are legit if you get used to them what size tires are you running? Only problem is like stated above is turning sucks but when your actually wheeling in rocks or mud its not bad its just hard ground that isn't going to alow the tires to rotate when you turn that makes it hard. If you truck isn't mainly used for wheeling and your planning on driving in snow with the hubs locked in or are on hard packed roads with them locked in then your going ot have problems. Also when they are locked and you drive it anyways it breaks stuff a lot easier then with a locker.
