v6 and 4cyl. 3rd members
« on: May 29, 2009, 08:44:11 AM »
i'm looking and getting a spool for my v6 third.  have a locker in it now but the popping on the trail and worse on the road gets nerve racking sometimes. my buddies locker was doing the same thing this last weekend and he ended up breaking the pin in the carrier that holds everthing in place. i'm afraid i'm going to blow mine apart on the trail and be screwed thinking about going to a spool.  does anyone know if a spool for a 4cyl. third will fit in a v6 third?  are they the same?

I do believe it will you just have to use the larger bearings.

According to a couple of web sites I looked at the PN's were different. But as stated above it all depends on what bearings you use.

I just went through this with my Detroit.  There is a bearing that will work to put a v6 differential into a 4cyl housing, however there is no bearing that I could find that will allow the use of a 4cy diff in a v6 housing.  I ended up having to order custom bearing spacers from Inchworm.  If you have not yet purchased a spool, get the v6 one.  That way you can put it in either housing without having to get custom spacers.  ARB has the v6 to 4cyl bearings I think they are about $40.

They are different. You will want to just keep your 3rd all V6. If there is a problem why you don't want V6 spool get an empty 4 cyl 3rd, they are plentiful and cheap. Then you can keep your V6 3rd for spare or probably sell they are more expensive and durable than the 4 cyl.
