22r leak fix?
« on: Oct 07, 2004, 09:05:56 PM »
Any one have any luck solving the leaky front seal problem on a 22r? when I rebuilt my engine i put one of those sleve things on my lower pully and replaced the seal but it seems no matter what i do i still have a slow leak. It makes such a mess under my truck cause the oil hits the pully and flings it as a mist all the way under my truck as well as all over the front of the engine block. Will a new pully and factory toyota seal fix the problem or is this just a trait of the 22r series motors.... Thanks for your help

Check into this:

Toyota offers 2 front crank seals for the 22R motors...one that is like .25" thick and one that is double lipped and like .50" thick.  Also, your oil pump oring could be leaking.  If you need, I can get the part numbers for these seals at work on Monday...

Every sleeve repair will eventualy leak :_oops:

This is due in part to the crankshaft end movement and the installition of the sleeve. Even after carefull installition of the sleeve, I still had .010" runout.

Get rid of the sleeve :reg:

Polish the hub with 400-600 grit sandpaper and install the seal in a differance location.
This can be done one of two ways.

1. Using a belt sander, I grind off the leading edge of the seal so that when it is installed, it will bottom out and sit deeper in the housing. The seal will contact the hub in a deeper, unused location.
2. Using the seal as a template, I carefully cut a circle out of thick gasket material and install it in the bore so that when the seal is installed, it will sit further out on the hub.

And in closing, never replace the seal on the engine. Always remove the oil pump, replace the housing o ring, and install the seal using a flat metal disk. Never hammer directly on the seal :screwy:
Always use sealent on the threads of the top oil pump bolt. It goes thur the timing cover and can also seep oil.

Thanks guys for all your help. What seal part # from toyota should i use? Im going to try marlins idea of shaving down the seal so it rides on a new area on the pully. Also what is the oil pump o-ring part #? Thanks again....TTL
