Gas Tank Fuel sending unit!!
« on: Apr 15, 2009, 08:53:38 PM »
Hello everyone,
I have a problem wih my sending unit. When I fill my tank from  1/8th of a tank empty I only get 8 gallons before the pump(Gas station) switches off. when my tank is full it only reads one bar above 3/4 of a tank. I know the tank is full but the gauge is off. I like to fill up the tank when the gauge is empty(A head thing?)
even though I have a least another 4-5 gallons. I've been living by filling the tank and running it untill it's empty (so says the gauge, but I know there's more!)
Right now I get about 160 miles before I fill up. (A head thing). I drive an '85 SR5 long bed  22re, 31' tires 141000 miles. I've looked around at local parts stores, but it seems like knowbody has a fuel sending unit for it, just all they have is a fuel pump. Should I go to a Toyota dealer (Do they have this?) I will not take no for an answer I'm pretty anal!!!?? As I believe the tank on the long bed is around 17 gallons?
Any info would be great!!
Brett

The dealership should have the part about $180. Click on the link below and the part number is included.

I did not look up a long bed. Below is a link you can save and input your VIn # and have a parts list on hand.

Common problem,

You have a 2WD, car, or other mismatched sender in your tank.
4 WD gas tanks are deeper, and use a difference sender assm.
The bolt pattern for the tank senders were the same for many years in both cars and trucks.

I picked up an '84 X cab and the tank read empty after only 120 miles. Dropped the tank and discovered a very long arm that allowed the float to rub against the top of the tank before it could send a full signal.
The sender did not match the tank.

The finger that sweeps across the ohms resistance wire board could be faulty as well, however, I believe that you are having a tank sender issue, not the gas gauge in the dash.

Drop the tank and get the proper sender.

Thanks everyone for the information, now I know what I have to do. I've swapped out different instrument clusters to check and see if gauge was bad but it was the same.
thanks everyone!

Hello everyone, Ok it's been since April now and I just got around to call Toyota parts for my fuel sending unit. The gentlemen on the phone asked me if it was the short bed tank or the long bed tank, I told him it was the long bed tank and he told me it was discontinued. He said the short bed unit is still available. Would this work? Does anyone know the difference between short and long bed fuel sending units? Why would there be a difference? I gave him my VIN # so he got the right info? help!! Any information would be great.

Not sure on that, maybe find a shortbed and measure how deep the tank is,  and compare the 2 sending units if you already bought it. :dunno:

I rely on my tripometer for a gas gauge too.  Mine shows full after a fill up, then shows empty after 75 miles.  Someday I might fix it.  Got to remember that I will need to find a match for my tank.

I'm not sure? There might be a difference between carbed and efi?
