Yes, that is a 4-speed L43 transmission.

The clutch kit you need for that is:
http://marlincrawler.com/clutch/heavy-duty/heavy-duty-clutch-kit-1200-lb

And select 1979-80 from the drop down menu list

How are your clutch master and slave cylinders doing? No leaks? I know on my 1981 people in the past had spilled plenty of clutch fluid over the master cylinder and it was rusted up pretty bad. It still worked ok, but I didn't want to chance anything so I just went ahead and replaced it. We only sell original Aisin Seiki CO clutch and brake hydraulics which are an excellent replacement at a great price!

Definitely go with a W56, preferably a 1985 W56-A style or 1986-88 W56-B style since your top shift 4spd transfer case can be made 100% compatible and will bolt right up once you take a grinder and lightly grind down the spline step on it's input.

Because the 20R and 22R share the same bellhousing bolt pattern, and beings the 1985-88 4cyl (non-turbo) engines  were from the same family as a fuel injected variant, the 22R-E, the 1985-88 W56 will bolt directly to your 22R.

Please note however that the release bearing on your L43 is not compatible with a W56. It will need to be changed when you do the swap. The rest of the clutch components and flywheel will all work just fine with the 1985-88 W56 transmission.

Then, once you find a 3RZ, all you need to do is go to a junk yard and locate a 3RZ bellhousing, which happens to be a bellhousing designed for a W59 transmission (the default 5spd trans of the 3RZ), but luckily for us, the W59 and the W56 -- being from the same family -- have the same front housing bolt pattern making their bellhousings completely interchangeable.

So get a W56-A or W56-B and bolt this between your 22R and your 4spd top-shift transfer case.

Then later in the future, get a 3RZ and it's matching bellhousing -- a bellhousing from the 1995-2004 W59 5spd transmission -- and put this bellhousing between the 3RZ and your W56-A or W56-B

More info before I :goodnight:

... Please note however that the release bearing on your L43 is not compatible with a W56. It will need to be changed when you do the swap. The rest of the clutch components and flywheel will all work just fine with the 1985-88 W56 transmission. ...

Regarding this, here are the two:

Release bearing for your L43:
http://www.marlincrawler.com/clutch/release-pilot/release-bearing-1979-80-4cyl

Release bearing for any 1981-89 4cyl transmission, which would include the W56-A & W56-B:
http://www.marlincrawler.com/clutch/release-pilot/release-bearing-1981-89-4cyl

Here is a picture of the later model bearing. Compare it to yours. Your L43 release bearing should be much thicker than this one:

1981-89 style clutch release bearing

Also, please note that a release bearing is INCLUDED with any clutch kit. So if you get a clutch kit for your 1979-80 transmission, and then later use a W56 transmission, then you only need to purchase an individual release bearing later when you swap in the W56. Make sure you get the clutch fork with the W56 you find because your L43 clutch fork will not work with a W56 trans.

Mike

 :clap2: ... that helped a :pokinit: ton... now i know what to look for and what i need to be buyin in the long run... exactly what i was lookin for.

so i found a 3rz out of a 98 tacoma at a wrecking yard with 122k and they want 895 for it... is that a pretty good deal? i havent looked at it and im not sure exactly what im getting for the 895 but it seems like 3rz's in washington are pretty rare... ive come across a few 2rz on craigslist but would much rather just go with what i want the first time around and not be kickin myself in the ass later down the road.
